After about an hour, Jigsaw and Hazen walk us back to the car. I can tell Fen is tired because of how quiet he is now. Part of me wants to scoop him up and carry him, but he’s not the ten-year-old I left years ago. Plus, I wouldn’t want to embarrass him in front of his new friend, Hazen. Once we get to the car, I tell Fen to get inside. “Sorry,” I tell Hazen.

“For what?”

A smile creeps across my lips. He’s so fucking sweet. He seems like he genuinely didn’t mind playing with Fen, although I did end up crashing and joining them. I unzip his jacket and begin slipping it off.

“Keep it. Heard you tell Saw that you were adding it to your collection,” Hazen says.

A chuckle escapes me. “Thanks. Thanks for the lunch, next time I’ll pay.”

“We come here every Sunday. It’s a tradition. You can come again next time. Fen too.”

My eyes wander to Jigsaw, who is standing off to the side, watching me. Today was for them. “Maybe a different day, Haze.” I hold open my arms and give him a hug before directing my hug to Jigsaw.

He glares.

“Maybe next time?” I ask with a short chuckle.

“No,” he grumbles.

“Bye, guys. Thanks again,” I say, moving to get in the driver’s seat. They wave to Fenric before we leave. Once we get to the edge of the Shadow World, the car wraps through dimensions and enters Hell.

I pull up and park, seeing Dad’s car. Fenric rushes out of the vehicle, and I follow him into the palace, but when we realize Dad’s in his study, we leave him alone and watch a movie.

Fenric falls asleep in the first twenty minutes, snoring away.

I pull out my phone, texting Hazen.

Me: Completely wiped my brother’s energy.

He looks at it quickly.

Hazen: Me? I need a nap, too!

I smile.

Me: He’s non-stop talking about you. He likes you more than me now, thanks.

Hazen: I like him better than you now, too.

I snort, rolling my eyes.

Me: Aw, thanks, ass.

Someone walk into the living room, making me look up. Dad comes in the room, his hair disheveled a bit.

“Hey,” I say.

He looks up from his papers. “Hey. I came to watch the movie with Fen, but I see what kind of day it is.”

Nodding, I turn down the TV. “We went out to lunch with Hazen and Saw.”

His brows raise. “Who is Saw?”

“A friend.”

“Like…” He moves to the couch. “A Ledger type friend or a just a friend like Khazon.”

“Which is less bad?”
