Miya and the others move out into the sand filled field. Her hands don’t stay off Rocco, but I can tell Rocco is a bit uncomfortable. Ashley, the red-haired girl, glances and narrows her eyes at him.

“This isn’t going to be good,” Hazen mutters.

I agree.

Asura looks up. “Is it because of their vibes? Is that… why?”

I shrug. “The ceremony bonds people. You have to want to be bonded and you have to get along with them. If the bond doesn’t hold, it doesn’t happen.”

“What happens if it doesn’t?”

I nod to the field. “Just watch. This one won’t hold.”

She nods, believing me.

We watch as all four people gather around the sand beds and one by one, they lay down. Their heads are near each other and their bodies make a cross. It reminds me of the first time I did this with my brother and my last reaper.

My nerves were high, being an eighteen-year-old. Even worse because I knewshe, Luna, was watching. I couldn’t spot her, but I felt her eyes. She had bonded here with Inarian a few weeks before and it made me get hot again.

My brother, Logan, patted my shoulder. “Don’t go getting all hot on me now, brother. Relax… We are doing this for us.”

His ceremony was the worst thing we went through, and we came out with a new strength and new views of each other. Being inside of someone’s subconscious was scary.

A teacher feeds all four of the people the red chips, and within seconds, they are out. It’s a matter of seconds later, Ashley’s screams cut through the air, and she shoots up. Her eyes are wide, and I can see they are glossing over. “Fuck this!” She launches in the air and rushes away from the others who are slowly waking up.

A few students begin to stand and move away with mutters.

Asura looks up at me. “Is that it?”

I nod.

“That was one full second!”

Hazen shrugs. “Apparently when you are under, it’s way more than a few seconds. Right, Ledger?”

I nod, standing and subconsciously holding out my hand for Asura. It’s even weirder that she takes it and lets me help her stand. “I felt like I was down there for five hours. It was a full minute, and that was the longest.”

Her eyes widen. “Down there? Meaning?”

“You go into others’ minds subconsciously and fight through the fears and challenged they have.”

She lets out a sigh. “I wonder how it’ll be for me.”

“If you get Inarian”—Jigsaw mutters but it draws her attention—“it’s going to be hard.”

She smirks. “So, are you on this team?”

I hold back a growl as I send him a glare. I know he doesn’t want to have a reaper. He doesn’t do well with listening to authority.

Jigsaw bright green eyes meet mine and he sends me a smirk to spite me. “Yeah. Why not?”

Asura makes a noise and I growl. “Wait…” She moves between us, ignoring me. “You said, yes?”

He nods, looking down at her. His eyes stay locked on her.

“Yes, to being my hound?”

He shrugs. “Wasn’t that the question?”
