“Alright, Ma.”

Denim smiled while putting a piece of sausage in her mouth.

“So, what do you do?”

“I’m a lawyer.”

“Oh, that’s really cool. Where are you from?”

“New York.”

My eyes widened.I loved having guests from New York. All oftheir stories were so different, but the same at the same time.

“You ever been?”

I shook my head. “No, but I would love to visit one day. I only know what it looks like from TV.Honestly, I’ve never been on a plane before. Just boats.”

“Oh, wow.”

“I keep telling her that she needs to get away from Citrus Grove. She’s too young and prettyto be wasting away around here.”

“Mom.”

“No, I’m serious. She already lost one good man because shedoesn’twanna leave here.Speaking of… I think he moved to New York.Where did Derek move, Quinn? Speaking of Derek, I need to call hispeople. I think his grandmother is sickor something.”

I shook my headand rolled my eyeswhile looking at Denim grin.

“I’m just saying.”

“You’re a lawyer, so I don’t think you could do much for my baby.Herdegreeisin hospitality, and—”

“Interpersonalcommunications and human relations,” I corrected her.

“Same thing.”

“And I got them to make sure tokeep this family business growing when you all leave them to me.”

“Girl, you got all the time in the world to run these businesses.”

“You’re right, Mom.”

Most times, agreeing with my mother made her hush and switch the subjects.

“Oh, I know I’m right.”

We all laughed.

My mother finished fixing the plate and set it on the tray. “And don’t forget to eat.”

As soon as she left out of the dining area,I stood and started making me a plate. Another thing I loved about the B&B was that we hardly ever met a person who wasn’t a friend to us. We always chatted with people like they were our long-lost best friend. It made our guests most comfortable and one of the reasons why our business averaged five starsacross the board.

“Should I make your friend a plate?”

She waved me off. “He’s good. He’ll eat when he’s hungry.” When she picked her vibrating phone up off the table, she sighed. “Do you have annoying siblings?”

I nodded my head and laughed.

She declined the call and put it back down on the table.Suddenly, her eyes lit up. “You sure you’re not trying to move? I can get you a job.”
