When the doorbell rang, heswiped his tears awayand got up fromthe table, leaving me withtears streaming down my faceandwith more questionsthan I had answers. Them havinga baby never crossed my mind. At best, I thought that they maybe had sex, and he broke her heart. Moments later, he came back with a rolling tray with our food and drinks on it.I stared at him while heplated our food and fixed our drinks.

“How much champagne? You know this is the champagne from last night.”

“Mr. Dymon,” I called his name.

“Yeah?”

“We have to talk about this. Youcan’t just say that and then try to change the subject.”

“Baby, I’m not trying to change the subject. I’m just trying to see how you want your Mimosa.”

“Just a tad of champagne, please.”

“I’m sorryfor getting emotional. It’s just that, this is my first time talking about it in a long ass time.”

“Don’tapologize for being emotional. You’re human. It’s okay to cry and be vulnerable.”

“I bet.”Hesat across from me.“One question at a time because I know how your mind works.”

“But I have so many.”

“And I plan to answer them. Eat, though. Because your stomach was growling like crazy last night.”

“You just never talked to her again after that?”

“No.”

“But…I don’t understand. How did she start working at DHQ, then?”

“Sweetheart, so many people wanted my father’s job. So many. When he decided to step down, at least four people thought they were going to get the job. Declan being number one, and Roger second. When he realized I wasn’t quitting, and couldactually handlethe pressure, about a year into the job,Roger hired her as his assistant, so I would have to see her every day.But just like I’ve been doing for the last four years, I ignored both him and her, making it clear for her to only talk to me about work, which means she and I exchange, maybe, thirty words a week, and I am being very generous about that.”

My eyes darted from side to side in a confused manner.

“Just ask a question, Quinci, and don’t overthink it. Please eat before your food gets cold.”

I scratched the top of my head. “Why did she even take the job to begin with if you and her ended bad, and you know…”

“I mean…when you realize that your bread and butter is gone, you start trying to reconcile, but the bridge was alreadyburned to the ground for me.The credit card she had of mine, cut off. The ten racks a month downtown LA apartment, gone. All her and herfamily’sshitwas packed neatlyin a storage for when she got out the hospital. They couldn’t even get in the apartment. She was blocked from contacting me. And was already gagged with the NDA, so she couldn’t speak on it, just a few subliminals here and there on social media.”

“Ooo, you don’t think that wastoocold, Mr. Dymon? She’d just lost your child and was grieving.”

My stomach ached, so I forked some of the eggs and stuffed my mouth. I closed my eyes savoring the taste of theeggs before picking up a piece of bacon and stuffing it in my mouth. It was so delicious.

“In hindsight, thirty-year-old Dymon thinks I could have showed just a little more compassion than I did, buttwenty-six-year-oldDymon didn’tgive a damn.I left her ass in LA to protecther, and she repaid me by having me booted from the hospital, never letting me see my child—or a birth certificate or a picture or nothing. I don’t even know what happened. All I know is that she went into labor, and when I got there, there wasn’t a baby.I never thoughtabouther or the situation again after, like, a week, until she’d stepped into DHQ.”

“Oh, wow. That is crazy. I’m so sorry. Even though you were mean to her, I think you were owed an explanation or something. At least see the body or something. What did your parents say?Surely they had tohave comforted you after that.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Honestly?”

“Is the next thing about to come out of your mouth mean?”

“Depends on who you ask.”

“Gently. I am a womanwho plans on having your babies, so if I am about to be repulsed by my futuremother-in-law, then…”

That made him laugh. “You have no idea.” Hetook a sip of his water. “When Iwas leaving the hospital, I texted my father and told him what happened, everything. I stood in the bathroomtrying not to have an anxiety attack because of how fast everything happened, and he texted me back and said, I’m sorry to hear that. Send her my well wishes. What time are you going back to Beijing? That’s all he said about it. You know Denim and Diesel were there for me. Declan even said something. His ass only felt bad because his girl was pregnant at the time.”

Mymouth was wide open. I couldn’t imagine going through a rough time like that andmy parents being completeassholesto me.
