“Hey, Quinn!” Mr. Samspokewhen I walkedinside. “I got your mom’s orderalmost ready; I was waiting on the crab. AndI put a couple extra prawns in there for your daddy. Hope he’s doing better.”

“He’s doingalright. Ready to get back in the groove.”

“I already know.”

Five minutes later, one of the workers came from around the registerwith a box in his hands. He followed me outside, helping me secure the box in my basket.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Also, good luck in New York.”

Igave him a tight smile. “Thank you.”

The ride homedidn’t take long. As soon as I pulled out in the backyard, I heard my mother’s loud laughter. After taking my helmet off, I unhooked the box andtook it inside. My mother was leaning against thecounter with the house phone pressed against her ear.

“Yeah. Yeah. Alright. I’ll have Quinn…”

The moment she said that, I tried to dart out of the kitchen, but she’d snapped her fingers at me.

“Alright, bye.”

“Hey, Mom. What is it that you want me to do?”

She laughed.“That was Monica. Someone wanted to use the reception hall inOctober, and I told her that I’ll have you look at the books tomorrow. You were about to run out of here like I was about to ask you to leave or something. Tell me about your day.”

“When I get out of the shower, I am definitely going to tell you about my day.”

“Uh-oh, you’re mad at me.”

I nodded my head slowly.

“Okay, maybe I put my foot in my mouth, but… don’t act like I don’t seeCentral Park on your mood board, though, Quinn. I just want to help you do everything on your mood board while you still can.”

I blinked confusedlybefore stepping closer to her.“While I still have the chance? Am I dying? Are you dying?”I whispered.

“Sweetie, no.No one is dying anytime soon, Lord’s willing. Even your grannies probably haveabout twenty more years.” She laughed. “I don’t know, baby girl. I just want youto venture out and experience things. That’s all.”

“Okay. I getit, butlet me decide when I want to leaveand venture out.”

“Okay, I’m sorry.”

I started out of the kitchen.

“Although, the job starts at a hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars and comes with a corporate apartment,” she spit out, making me pauseand take a few steps backward into the kitchen, keeping my eyes on her. “But no pressure, though.”

I nodded my head and headed to my room.

* * *

It was a little after midnight, and I’d been tossing and turning for hours. After I showered and got my PJ’s on, I went back downstairsto eat some of my mom’s seafood boil along with the guests, andI could tell they really enjoyed it. Even Roy had a slight smile on his faceas he cracked open the king crab. While we were eating, she talked more about the job and what it would entail. She described it as meetings and paperwork. That sounded easy.Too easy, in fact. And anything that soundedtoogood to be true, usually was.

Lying on my side, I looked at my life’s mood board and yearly mood board. On my life’smood board, there was a picture of Times Square and a snow-covered pictured of Central Park. I’d only seen it on TV, so it was something that I wanted to see at least once before I died. Denimsaid that she’d make the job temporary for six months, and if I didn’t like it, I could leave and forget it ever happened.Six months wasn’t bad, but it would be the first time I’ve ever been away from my parentsthat long.

“Quinci, it’s only six months. You can do it.”

What’s the worst that can happen?
