“Whatever.”

Once the race was over, I grabbed his hand and walked away. The set up was basically like a carnival. Food and drink booths. Lots of games. A Citrus Grove exhibit telling the information of the city what it looked like in the beginning.

“So, what do you think of Citrus Grove so far?”

“It’s cool. I can see why you love it so much. It’s beautiful. The people are really, really nice and funny as hell. And girl, the women…”

I stopped and looked up at him, making him grin.

“What? The women, what?”

“Chill, woman. All I was gon’ say is, it seems like all y’all cornbread-fed like a mothafucka.”

I playfully punched his arm, making him laugh. “Really, Mr. Dymon?”

“Hell yeah. I never seen so much natural ass in my life all around me, but rest assured, your lil’ thick ass is the only one I want. I can promise you that.”

That made me smile. I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him on his lips.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and held it up to his face. His eyes scanned the screen before he rolled his eyes slightly.

“Is everything okay?”

When I tried to look at his phone, he put it back in his pocket.

“That was my father. He emailed me, telling me that one of our…his…the company’s biggest investors pulled out of the company. He’s ordering me back to New York…well to Beijing to talk to them.”

“What does that mean? Investors pulling out. How does he know where you are?”

“It means that the company will start to lose money. My father always knows where I am, no matter what.”

“So, what do you want to do? We can go back to New York. You know that I never meant for you to quit—”

“Baby, while I am only a tad bit worried about it, I’m sure Diesel will do what he has to do, but it was a long time coming. My father should have appreciated me while he had me. If the company loses some money, it’ll be all his fault.”

“Oh, I see. Well, let’s keep walking.”

“No, you got something on your mind. What do you want to say?”

“Baby, I just want you to be sure about this. And I don’t want you to resent me if your company closes.”

He palmed my face. “Oh, baby. The company is a long, long way from closing down. Years away. Who knows what may happen then? But for now, I would like to enjoy my time here, not talking about my former job.”

“Fine. Just know. If years from now, the company closes and you start to resent me, I ain’t going no damn where, and I ain’t letting you leave me for your sexy, little secretary. Because you had your chance to leave me, and you didn’t. So, you’re just gonna be miserable with me.”

That made him laugh so hard.

“Your mind is ridiculous, but I love it. And besides, aren’t you my fine little secretary?”

“Whatever. It don’t matter. You heard what I said.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

As we were walking, I heard my Granny Jo’s loud voice. I tried to pull Dymon out of her vision, but it was too late.

“Quinci! Come on over here!”

“Whatever you do, don’t drink the moonshine, Mr. Dymon. Too strong for your city blood.”
