I gasped. “Are you still recording?”

“My bad.” He tapped the screen on his phone. “I didn’t know you could do that.”

“And I am going to totally regret it in the morning. I hadn’t tumbled since high school.”

When the small wave ran up my bottom, I moved to my knees.

“Baby, the water is warm. Come in. This is literally the perfect time for beach weather.”

“Maybe tomorrow. I promise.”

Looking past him, I saw Derek, Fiona, and Justice standing about twenty feet away from us. I wondered if he told Justice about his blowup at my house. He couldn’t have, or she wouldn’t be all up on him the way she was. I was never in the business of making people jealous, but I wanted Derek to see that he’d never have me again. Standing, I reached for Mr. Dymon’s phone, opening the camera, facing us. I started dancing on him to the beat of the music. I watched him via the camera, looking down at my ass, biting his lip.

“I’m in love with this ass, baby.”

When he smacked it, I grinned. He looked in the camera and mouthed, I love you. Before I could respond, I heard Justice hollering.

“Derek, no!”

Both Dymon and I looked at him stalking over to us.

“Baby, you gon’ see me act really ugly because this will be strike three.”

“Please, don’t. Don’t give him the satisfaction.”

Dymon had been itching to get in his ass since the night of the fair. It was killing him that he couldn’t fire him. Because they would’ve ended up in court, suing Dymon for wrongful termination, and even if Denim could win the case, he would have already lost in the court of public opinion, and Tyra wasn’t having it. I was sure that they’d gone over it a hundred different ways and, in the end, Dymon ended up being the loser. So, they both had to grin and bear it. It shouldn’t have been all of that since Derek had a fiancée and a baby on the way.

“Quinci, did your boyfriend tell you why he was here?”

“Come on, Derek,” Fiona urged him.

“Yeah, Derek, listen to your family.”

“So, he didn’t tell you, did he? He’s buying your family’s grove! This is the nigga who you giving pussy to! The man who’s trying to steal your family’s land.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Derek?”

We’d started to grow a crowd, and I was already embarrassed.

“Quinci, your parents are losing The Grove, and Dymon is going to buy it. I heard it straight from the horse’s mouth. I was going to apologize to your father for acting like I did yesterday, and I overheard them talking about it.”

I shook my head, trying to blink back tears. Derek wouldn’t lie to me, and neither would Dymon. I turned and looked up at Dymon.

“Is that true?”

He didn’t say anything.

“Think about it, Quinci. Denim shows up to your parents’ bed and breakfast, and suddenly, you move to New York, and he’s here now. Think about it.”

I shifted from side to side. Dymon’s jaws clenched, and his nose flared.

“Quinci, please. Let’s go home and talk about it. Talk about that with your family.”

“No. Answer me! Are you buying my family’s land?”

“No.”

“So, what is he talking about!”
