He smiled at me as I slid in the back seat of the car.

“I don’t advise you to get used to it. Good morning, Quinci. Nervous?”

“Good morning. My nerves had justsubsided until you asked me that, but I think I’ll be okay.”

“You read the handbook?”

I nodded my head.

“You ate breakfast?”

“Watch out, Bern.”

Denimstarted to laugh so hard. She looked up Al. “Bern is her mother.”

He nodded his head. “Ah, I see.”

I looked at her. “But, yes, I ate. I called room service this morningaround six because I thought that it would take them a littlewhileto bring me the food, but it was very good.”

“Good. Make sure you leave a review.”

“Can I ask you a question? And be honest with me. I know you are a lawyer, and you are trained to lie… but…” Her eyes shifted, causing me to pause and clear my throat. “You get what I’m saying. I just really, reallyneed you to be honest with me.”

“Of course.”

I thoughtfora moment. “No, two questions.”

She raised her eyebrow.

“Do I look okay? You know I’ve never worked in the corporate world, and neither have my parents.Business casual to us in Citrus Grove is a pair of Khaki’s anda plaid button down. And… do you thinkthat I willactually fitin here… because I am, you know…country, I guess... as opposed to being a city girl.I think you get what I’m saying, right?”

“Quinci, from our very firstconversation, I knew that you were the perfect person for this position, and who cares if you fit in or not. You’ll be fine, trust me. You’ll find yourcrew. Don’t worry about that. And I think you look okay. You don’t?”

I shrugged my shoulders.“I guess. Just don’t wanna look like the weirdo on the first day.”

“Well, if youguess, then I guess. What Iwillsay is, if I had the hips and butt you showed off in your grove uniform, I’d flaunt it.”

That mademe smile.

I looked out the window, staring at all the cars, until we came to a full stop in front ofa tall, sleek black building.

As soon as I touched the door handle, Al said, “Ms. Everly, I got it.”

I grinned.“Because I sure was about to open it.”

He got out and opened the door for me before walking around the car, opening the door for Denim.

I grabbed my tote out and closed the door.

“Have a good first day, Ms. Everly.”

“Thank you.”

“You know, I think I did see this building last night when I was staring out of the window.”

“You probably did.”

Walking up the stairs, the doorman opened the door for us. Inside, the building was cold. Very cold. There were a lot of people walking aroundthe lobby area, a few people stood at a coffee table. Everyone had on blackand white, and suddenly, I felt like an orange among a box full of apples.Even though I didn’t make eye contact with anyone, Icould feel the eyes on me and my orange shirt. A few people nodded their heads at Denim before the elevator doorman pressed the button for us.
