“Anything else I can get you ladies to drink, just let me know. Have you had time to look at the menu?”

I picked up the paper menu on the table, glancing over it quickly. “Just the club sandwich. Hold the onions. And the water is fine.”

“Oh, I’ll have that as well,” Fi added.

He nodded his head before walking away.

“So.” Shetook a sip of her water and eyed me.

I knew she wanted to talk about the elephant in the room, her cousin, Derek. Both her and Derek moved to Citrus Grove to live with their grandmother when they were teenagers because Derek’s mom, who was also looking after Fi, passed away. They were fromChicago, so they were already accustomed to the city life. Aware of that, I should’ve known they would move back to a large city. She was the one who hooked us up, even though he was two years older than us.

“So, what, girl?”

“Have you um… talked toD?”

I shook my head. “About what?”

She shrugged her shoulder. “Anything, I guess.”

I didn’t want to tell her that we were thinking about each other at the same timelast night and were about to text each other.

“It’s been a while.”

“You did break his heart.”

I sipped my water. “I remember it differently. I wanted to make it work, long distance. He didn’t. And the very next day, he was on social media with ablonde chick. I was so disgusted I blocked him from everything. But I got another phone, and he managed to sneak a couple texts in a couple years ago.And why does everyone say I broke his heart? That is very annoying.”

“I mean… he did want you to move to New York with him.”

“Nothing about the blonde?”

She shrugged her shoulders and took a sip of her water. Thiswas the only problem that Fiona and I had as friends. She and Derek were thickas thieves, guardingeach other’s hearts like it was their own. I got it. They’d grown up together, but it would’ve been nice for her to take my side for once. I knew it would be less likely since I came in the picture later, but still. It was also why I think our relationship fizzledwhen I didn’t move with him.

“Do you know your cousin is the reason why we fight all the time?He literally moved on with his life yearsago, andlook at us still fightingover him.” I laughed.

“I know. You know how I get about him, butyou areright, though.”

A cook brought over ourfood, and it smelled so good. I stuffed a fry in my mouth and closed my eyes because it tasted so good.

“Jesus.I already know where I’m going to be eating for lunchmost times. With all the walking I’m going to be doing, I won’t gain much weight.”

“Mhm. Do you want to go shopping after we leave here?”

I looked taken aback. “What do you mean go shopping? You’re not going back to work?”

“Girl, no. I’mactually Price’s assistant, he’s Dymon’sbest friend. He pretty much lets me do what I wantas long asI’m not slacking on my work. Plus, his ass keeps up with my work phone. You’ll be getting one soon.”

“God, I hope not. Dealingwith that attitudeoutside of the normalwork hours is not ideal for me. I would block his ass from his owndamnwork phone because, no, chile.”

She laughed.

“I am so serious. All I can think about is the look on his face as those elevator doors closed. I could have punched himright in those perfect lips.”

Shelaughed some more. “I really missed you, girl.”

For the next thirty minutes, wecaught up while eating before she paid for our lunch.

“Babe, I can’t wait to take you out on the town, honey. Text me.”
