“Um…” He grabbed my hand. “I went home last week to tell you, but I chickened out. And I didn’t expect to see you today, so I just wanted to tell you before you found outfrom other people.”

“I mean. I just didn’t expect to be ambushed like this. I expected you to move on. You’re a great guy.I’m genuinely happy for you. Whether you believe it or not.”I shrugged my shoulders.

My work phone buzzed again.

He looked down at it. “Maybe you should get that.”

“It’s just Mr. Dymon,” I responded while opening the text message.

Danger:

Subj: Tea. Need Tea.

Subj: Suits. Pick up suits at 24th Ave.

Subj: Job. If you want your job, respond.

My mouth opened at the texts.

“He gave me this work phone and a raise to be even more annoying.” I laughed to keep fromcrying, literally.

“A raise. Already. Interesting.”

“Yeah, I know.”

My phone vibrated again.

Danger: Subj: Ride. Bernard is waiting at the corner.

As soon asI saw Justicewalking back to the table, I stood up.

“Quinci, be careful with Dymon, okay?”

“Sure.”

He grabbed my hand. “I’m serious, Quinn.I don’t want to see you hurt behind him.”

Justice cleared her throat when she made it to the table, prompting him to let my hand go.

“Nice to meet you, Justice. Congrats on the baby and the ring. You’re a very lucky girl.”

Walking out of the café, Dymon’s car was right where he said it would be. His driver stood outside the door waiting to open it for me.

“Ms. Everly. I’m Bernard.”

“Hi.”

Once I was inside, he closed the door and got in the driver’s seat.

“We are going to get suits, and we are going to get tea,” I explained while texting Dymon back.

Me: For the absoluterecord, I am ONLY doing this because I desperately needed to get saved from the conversation I was in the middle of, but do you see what time it is? And whoactually hasthe time to put a subject in their text message? Old man.

Danger: Subj. Your Words: “If you want me to be on call for you 24/7, then I need a work phone and a raise.” You got your work phone and your raise. Now, it’s time to work 24/7.

I rolled my eyes so hard. “How long have you worked for the warden?”

He chuckled. “Several years.”
