Then, my little girl came back with news shocking us all—she was getting married. It was a whirlwind romance to some English guy she’s known for two seconds. Not only was she to wed, but she was also to move permanently to the UK.

It was like one explosion after another.

And I didn’t take well to any of this.

You don’t fall in love after two-fucking-seconds and give up your entire life. But no matter what I said, Jessa was no longer listening to me. Instead, she was adamant about leaving her life behind.

None of this made sense. Everything is so rushed, and when the wedding was planned, we got into a heated fight in which I refused to walk her down the aisle. My decision caused conflict between Kate and me. Morgan, however, chose to keep quiet on the matter despite Kate pushing her to get me to see the bigger picture.

Lex, in the end, was the one to convince me since he had been asked to replace me.

My daughter was choosing this life, and regret was something I didn’t want to live with. Walking Jessa down the aisle evoked more emotion than I care to admit. I have no fucking idea how Lex has done this twice, given the symbolic meaning behind letting your daughter go.

In the short time Jessa had known Benedict, there wasn’t much to him to raise concern despite my reluctance to accept the relationship. He’s an English man with polite manners from a wealthy and prestigious background.

And though none of this made sense, overhearing my nieces made the picture come to full view. I still remember the conversation word for word, the day of Jessa’s wedding.

“Did you speak to Andy?” Ava asked.

Millie nodded. “Yeah, he’s not doing well. I heard crackling and some women’s voices in the background.”

“Of course, he’s not doing well. The love of his life is marrying another man. A man she met to forget about how she’s in love with her best friend.”

“C’mon, Ava. She wouldn’t just marry Benedict to get over Andy. Jessa is the romantic one of us. You know she must genuinely love Benedict to marry him.”

“There’s deep, core-shaking love, and then there’s this,” Ava continued. “Just admit it, Millie. She’s not over Andy. This is temporary.”

“Marriage isn’t temporary. This will work out,” Amelia stated.

“Right, just like it did for Mom and Uncle Julian?”

“Oh, don’t start that again. If Dad hears you.”

“Or even Uncle Noah and Morgan?”

“Look, what Noah and Kate have is strong. Their friendship—”

“Exactly. This is Noah and Kate all over again.”

“This isn’t the same as them. There’s no baby involved. I mean, she’s not pregnant.”

“How do we know?”

“Ava, look at her? She’s just downed three champagnes in a row.”

“Fair call. But also, is she getting that wasted because she realizes she walked down the aisle with the wrong man?”

“Look, she made this decision, and we need to respect that.”

“So, you’re admitting Andy plays a part in this?” Ava continued to push.

“If I admit it, will you drop this subject? This is the first kid-free event I’ve had in… I can’t even think. I want to get wasted too and then fuck my husband into oblivion in our fancy hotel room.”

“Such a mouth on you.” Ava laughed. “And you’re supposed to be my role model.”

The two of them broke out into laughter before Amelia spoke again. “Poor Daddy. What happened to his angels?”

“We discovered all about the di—”
