“Morgan, don’t bullshit with me. Something’s not right.”

“What does Kate have to say?”

“I need to respect her decisions.”

“Sounds like good advice.”

I stare into my ex-wife’s eyes and know she understands her daughter, maybe better than I do. They have a mother-daughter bond, and Jessa has always remained close with Morgan even after the move.

“Noah, this is Jessa’s life. While I may not agree with every decision she’s made, she made them. She has the right to live her life how she sees fit.”

“She’s made a mistake.”

“Her son isn’t a mistake,” Morgan states adamantly.

“But letting go of Andy is.”

Morgan purses her lips. “You know, both you and Kate had a friendship just like theirs. In the end, it prevailed.”

“It’s not the same.”

I nearly say it’s not the same because there was a moment when I saw a future with only Morgan, when I blocked out any memory of Kate. But we were never meant to be, too different people who just got caught up in the heat of the moment. We fell pregnant with Jessa and did what we thought was right at the time for our daughter.

She places her hand on mine. “Noah, if Andy is the one for her, let the universe do its thing. Don’t force it.”

With those words, I leave her office annoyed she’s being so blasé about the whole thing. How can I let my daughter continue to make mistakes? I don’t care how old she is. She’s my daughter.

When I arrive home, Kate is sitting inside our home office wearing her glasses. I stare at my beautiful wife, thinking how, of late, our conflict over this matter has driven a wedge between us. But Morgan is right. Kate is more than my wife, she’s my best friend, and our bond tightened well before we became intimate. In the end, the universe led us where we were always meant to be.

“You’re home,” is all she says, not looking at me.

“Is Sienna home?”

Kate shakes her head, then grabs her mug and heads toward the kitchen as I follow her. “She’s staying at Ellie’s house.”

“I went to see Morgan.”

Kate stills, removing her glasses with a sigh. “Don’t force her to be part of your sick and twisted game. It’s not fair on me, and it’s not fair on Morgan.”

“What game?”

“You think I haven’t figured out that you insisting Andy take on this project is because of Jessa? You and Lex are both just as bad as each other.”

“Andy is the best photographer I know. Both Lex and I believe he’s the best of the best.”

“I won’t argue that, but our plan wasn’t to hit this phase until the end of the year, and suddenly, it needs to be done now. Right after our visit to Jessa?”

I lower my head, the memories of my past crippling my emotions. “I know what it’s like to lose my best friend.”

“So do I, Noah.”

“And here we are.”

Kate sighs, closing her eyes momentarily. “Here we are. Married, business partners, and parents to three kids.”

I move closer to her, wrapping my hand around Kate’s waist to bring her closer to me. I’ve fucking missed her and hate when we get into fights because we’re both as stubborn as each other.

“With how much we’ve fucked each other, how we didn’t have more kids is beyond me.”
