“Right, I forgot you’re always looking at vaginas.”

Lex lets out a huff. “Can we please eat now? Without all the talk?”

We eat in silence for not even a minute before the conversation shifts toward work, babies again, anything which gladly doesn’t involve vaginas.

Absent from our family dinner are Noah and Kate. According to Charlie, they were in Phoenix for work. Nash had some function to go to, and Sienna went back to campus.

After dinner, I hang out in the living room while Ashton explains Pokemon to me, which, thankfully, I was clued in on from my childhood. The kid can talk nonstop about characters evolving. For an almost four-year-old, he’s damn smart.

“Uncle Andy, why don’t you live here?”

“I live in New York, you know, the place your parents take you to with the big buildings.”

“The place that smells like wee?”

Unsure of what to say, I can’t argue since some streets in the city are questionable.

“Sometimes, but it’s home.”

“Why don’t you have a girlfriend?”

Will snickers beside me. “Uncle Andy likes lots of women and at different times.”

I chuckle faintly. “Millie will kill you.”

Charlie calls the kids for dessert as we head out to the patio where a fire is lit. Austin and Ava join us while we sit around admiring the burning flame.

“How do you really feel about London?” Ava asks. “Without the parentals around to judge your answer.”

I lean back into the patio chair, staring at the flame.

“Not sure yet.”

“Is it because a certain someone lives there, and you feel obliged to see her?” Millie asks.

“I don’t know. Do I have to see her?”

“She’s family,” Ava reminds me. “I understand you don’t talk, but family is family.”

“Okay, you’re giving it to me from a woman’s perspective,” I drag.

Ava turns to Austin. “What do you think?”

“I think if she’s married with her own family and seeing her will raise unwarranted feelings, just stay away.”

“Well, that’s rude,” Ava complains, then turns to Will. “What about you?”

Will lowers his gaze. “I agree. Nothing harder than seeing a woman you love with someone else.”

It suddenly becomes quiet. It dawns on me the history between the four people sitting around me. I lose myself in thought, questioning why this has to be so damn hard.

“Yeah, but addressing the pink elephant in the room…” I begin with but choose my words carefully. “Everyone is where they’re meant to be, right?”

“Yes,” Millie admits first. “But Andy, sometimes we hurt people and make poor decisions. If you can avoid that, it will cause less heartache in the end. Maybe see where London takes you and go from there.”

“It could take you into the pants of some English heiress,” Ava muses. “You could be our only hope of being connected to the royal family.”

“Too much Eric,” Millie tells her as we all laugh.
