After a quick shower, I change into a fresh outfit for work. Unfortunately, there’s no time for coffee, so I choose to get into the office earlier and just grab one there. After the night I had, I suspect it’s a double shot kind of day, maybe even triple with how exhausted I am.

The day drags on, or perhaps it’s not the day but the weight of my guilt from last night. My head bounces from one thought to another. Guilty one moment, exhilarated the next. I hate him, yet I need him inside me. The mixed emotions do nothing but plague me.

The same goes for my empty inbox since Masen doesn’t bother to text. A simple ‘did you get home okay’ would suffice.

But it doesn’t come.

Not today.

Not the day after.

And not even a week later.

I resign myself to the fact that we indeed had a fling. Now, he’s flown the coop and busy removing his clothes for some other clueless woman who succumbs to his sexy ways. Eric was right, even though it pains me to admit it.

It’s not like I want anything from Masen, and I’ll be damned if I cave and send him a text. What will I even say? Nothing, absolutely nothing. I’m not that girl, clingy and all desperate because he hasn’t called or texted.

So, I resort to the next best thing—Ava.

“I’m so glad you have time for lunches now you’re not studying full-time,” Ava mentions while digging into her pasta Bolognese. “Don’t get me wrong, I love being an entrepreneur with the freedom to do what I want, but sometimes it can get lonely during the days. Mom and Millie work, Alexa is still in school. Jessa’s in Manhattan now. Luna is always busy, but I’m not sure why. Don’t you think that’s odd?”

I wait for my cue to talk since Ava is non-stop today. “Luna is a woman of mystery, that I will agree on.”

“I bet she’s sleeping with some old sugar daddy, and she doesn’t want to admit it.”

“Luna’s not motivated by wealth, quite the opposite with her.”

“Then I’d hate to say it …” Ava trails off, leaning against her chair, “… some Daddy then.”

My body shudders at the mention ofDaddy.

“You’ve got playdates with Millie,” I remind her, eager to get off the topic of Luna.

“Yeah, I know.” Ava sighs, but then the corners of her mouth curve into a smile. “I’m just glad to hang out with you.”

It takes a moment to register as my thoughts are so misplaced with everything going on. When I realize she’s said something nice, I quickly smile.

“So, what else is happening in your life?” I ask, trying to map out how to land on the topic of Masen without seeming obvious. “All the men in your life playing nice?”

Ava places her fork down to laugh. “Austin always plays nice. A little overprotective with the new baby here, but I’m enjoying the attention.”

“He’s an amazing husband.”

“I’m a very lucky woman,” she responds with her eyes dancing. “Fate did its thing, and look how my life turned out?”

With a relaxed smile, I touch her hand. “I’m so happy for both you and Millie.”

“Thanks, sis. Now, we just need to find you a man.”

“Speaking of men,” I begin with, clearing my throat. “Dr. Jenner’s nephew is in town, and she’s asked me to take him out tonight since he’s my age. He’s majoring in psych too, so at least we’ll have something to talk about.”

“Um, excuse me. We’ve been sitting here for close to an hour, and you only mention this now?”

“Firstly, you were rambling on about stuff. Secondly, this is not a date.”

“But he’s single?” Ava questions, cocking her head. “And you’re single?”

On a technicality, I’m single. That’s if I don’t factor my fling—which is now flung—into this.
