Distracted would be an understatement.

Fucking her sweet-tasting pussy is more accurate.

But now is not the right time to dwell on being between her legs when I have more pressing problems to figure out.

I knock on the door, and not long after—Cruz answers with a surprised face.

“What are you doing here?”

“Mom told me Addison wanted this manuscript,” I lie, keeping my expression flat. “Is she here? I can’t exactly leave it lying around.”

Cruz snorts, turning back around as I follow him. “Yeah, because I care what’s inside the smutty books.”

“The smutty books, as you refer to them, bring in high revenue. The profit on these books makes the company wealthy, and that’s how Mom and Dad paid for your college tuition.”

A laugh escapes Cruz. “So, I should be thanking the dirty old women for putting me through college?”

“Never mind,” is all I say, ignoring his immaturity. “So, what time do you expect Addison home?”

Cruz shrugs, plonking himself on the couch. “You tell me, bro. She only told me a few hours ago she’s going out with some guy. I’ve sent her multiple texts, but she’s not responding.”

I nod then sit beside him. “I can wait so that Mom gets off my back.”

“The woman is a ballbreaker sometimes.”

“Try working with her.”

Ten minutes pass, and the entire time, Cruz plays his game with a string of profanities expelling from his loud mouth when he’s close to losing. I check the time on my phone again, noting it’s after nine.Fucking late for a date.

Carefully, I tilt my phone, so Cruz can’t see my screen.

Me:Are you having fun on your date?

I wait five minutes, the message showing unread. The rise in my body temperature is causing a headache as my patience grows thin for each minute that passes. Who the hell does she think she is? Going on a date and doing God knows what.

Don’t go there.

My fingers type before the words even form a sentence in my head.

Me:Answer me.

Then, there’s a rattle at the door and laughter coming from the other side. The door opens suddenly to Addison’s bright face with all smiles, falling the moment she sees me.

“Addy,” Cruz greets while eyeing the guy beside her. He’s tall, but not as tall as me. Dressed in a pair of jeans and tee, very casual considering it’s a date. “Why didn’t you pick up your phone?”

She forces a smile. “Because I was at dinner with Harrison.”

The guy extends his hand to shake Cruz’s. “You must be the roommate.”

Cruz returns the gesture, but his expression is less than friendly, and Mom’s conversation from earlier comes to mind. “Her best friend as well.”

Then, Harrison turns his attention to me, extending his hand. I reluctantly shake it, then pull away as quickly as possible.

“Masen’s my brother,” Cruz mumbles, but his annoyance is evident. “So, why did you guys come back here?”

“Just to show him around, you know,” she trails off.

There’s a momentary silence before Cruz scratches his head and looks at me.
