My chest warms. I draw in a slow breath. I know we barely know each other yet, but in a weird way, it feels like we’ve been connected for a long time.

“Can we rewind?” I ask.

“Sure,” he says.

I smile, take a sip from my wine glass, then say, “It’s gorgeous out here.”

“Isn’t it?” he says, playing along. “I come here all the time.”

And, like that, our conversation is flowing again.

As our date progresses, the golden sun melts into the darkening sea. The orange and pink in the sky gradually deepens to purple, and then to a velvety black. And then, like magic, the night lights up, the glittering stars reflecting across the surface of the dark ocean.

“Oh, wow,” I murmur. “That’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.”

“Yes, it is,” says River.

But when I turn my head, he’s not looking at the stars.

He’s looking at me.

Chapter Three

River

One Week Later

When I get to Leah’s, she’s standing in front of her townhouse, holding a beach bag and dressed in one of those cover-up wraps that girls put on over their swimsuits.

Unsurprisingly, she looks damn gorgeous.

After getting to know Leah better on our first couple of dates, though, she radiates in a different kind of way. Now I know how beautiful she is on the inside, too. I don’t just want to spread open those perfect thighs of hers. I don’t just want to make her scream my name. I want to be with her—and I want to be with her in a real, serious way.

I jump out of my truck and run around to open her door for her.

“Morning,” she says, smiling as she approaches. “You sleep well?”

I would have slept better with her in my bed. But I don’t tell her that.

“Yeah, not bad. You?”

“Same.”

“Good.” I grin at her. “You ready for another adventure?”

“You bet I am. Where should I put this?” Leah holds up her bag; I take it and slide it behind the seats. I resist the urge the reach out and grab a handful of her rounded ass as she climbs into the truck.

Fuck, she’s killing me with those curves.

I jog around and get into the driver’s seat.

“We headed to the beach?” Leah asks as she buckles her seatbelt.

“Not exactly.”

“Then why’d you tell me to wear a swimsuit?”

“I wanted to see you in a bikini,” I say, shooting her a grin.
