Chapter Three

Dean

“No way,” I say, laughing as I lean back in my seat. “That movie isterrible.”

“No, it isn’t.” Zoey peers at me over the rim of her cup and gives me a teasing smile. “It’s amazing. Cheesy, sure, but amazing.”

“All right. I give up.” I hold both hands up in a gesture of surrender and return her smile. For a moment, neither of us says anything. We don’t need to. There’s comfort in the silence.

It’s almost hard to believe that we’ve spent the past thirty minutes absorbed in conversation, considering Zoey initially seemed hesitant to join me. But that’s what happened. We’ve talked about movies, chatted about some of the stunt tricks we’ve picked up so far in our careers, and it’s all just seemed so…natural.

I feel like I could spend the rest of the day talking with her about everything and nothing.

“Can I take you out sometime, Zoey?” I ask, my heart tightening inside my chest. I’ve already been turned down by her once when I asked her out for a drink, but hopefully the past thirty minutes have changed her mind.

Zoey’s smile doesn’t fade, which I take as a good sign. Slowly, she runs her tongue over her bottom lip and leans forward. She’s about to say something when her phone starts dancing around in circles on the table.

Fuck. Terrible timing.

“Sorry,” she says quickly, grabbing her phone and pressing it against her ear. “Hello?”

She nods as she listens to whoever’s speaking, mutters a word of acknowledgment, then sets the phone back down. She doesn’t look particularly happy.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

She shrugs. “The car is fixable, but it’ll need to stay in the shop for a while. Not to mention that it’s going to be pricey.” She exhales sharply, and I can tell she’s already forgotten about the date I want to take her on.

Nothing against car mechanics, but they sure as hell should work on their timing.

“I can give you rides to the set while your car is in the shop,” I offer. I’m not saying it just to be close to her—I’d make the same offer for someone else in this situation, too.

“Oh, no, that’s okay. I don’t want to be an inconvenience.”

“You won’t be,” I say firmly. “Really. I insist.”

“Well…” She lets out a breath. “Okay. That’d be really great. Thank you.”

“Happy to help. Want me to drive you home now?”

“I actually have to swing by the grocery store before going home. So I can just call a—”

I cut her off. “I can take you there, too.”

She lifts her brows. “You sure?”

“Yep. I could use a few things, anyway.” I grab the keys to my bike, then slip a few dollars under my coffee cup. “I have another helmet under the seat, so that won’t be a problem, either.”

“Another helmet?” Zoey says, a smile playing across her lips.“You do this a lot?”

“Nope. Just like to be prepared.” I grin at her. “You never know when you’ll get the opportunity to save a damsel in distress.”

“Mmm. I see.” She gives me a playful smirk and we walk out of the café together.

When we reach my bike, I pop the seat open, hand Zoey her helmet, and then climb onto the bike. She gets on after me, wrapping her arms around my midsection, causing heat to spread all over my body. As I merge with the traffic, I have to take some steady breaths to keep my focus on the road.

Not an easy task when Zoey is pressed this tightly against me.
