I move my hand up and my fingers find her waistband. I undo the button on her jeans and slide my hand into her panties. Her skin is warm and so goddamn soft.

When my fingers reach the slickness between her legs, a jolt of electricity rushes up my spine.

“Yes,” she whispers as I swirl my fingers over her clit. “Oh, God. That’s so good.”

She matches the circular motion of my fingers by moving her hips, pressing herself harder and harder against my hand. I bring my mouth back up to hers and we kiss deeply, allowing ourselves to be swept away by the tidal wave of mutual desire.

My cock is rock hard, angry that it’s still trapped. But her pleasure comes first. Right now, that’s all I give a shit about.

Soon, her body is trembling against me, her hands gripping onto my biceps as her breathing grows ragged. Pulling her mouth from mine, she throws her head back and lets out a cry of pure ecstasy as her thighs clamp together around my hand.

When she relaxes, I slide my hand out of her panties and lean in to brush my lips against her neck.

“It’s so sexy to hear you come,” I murmur.

She laughs and looks at me. There are flames of lust in her eyes. But, just for a moment, I see something else flickering there, too.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

“Yeah,” she says. “That felt amazing. I just…” She draws in a nervous breath. “I need to be upfront with you about something.”

There’s pain in her voice, and instantly, my desire for her is replaced with protective concern.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Taking her hand in mine, I lead her across the kitchen and make her sit down. “Whatever it is, it’s okay.”

She folds her hands in her lap. “I’m a mess, Dean. A big, hot mess.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You know how I told you that my parents divorced when I was a kid?” she says, her eyes dropping. “Well…it was pretty nasty. Even all these years later, they still can’t even be in the same room. And I think it’s really affected me. Or, I don’t know. Maybe things would have ended up like this anyway. The point is, I’m really bad at this kind of stuff. Whenever I get involved with a guy, it ends horribly. I think relationships just aren’t in my destiny.”

She finally looks back up at me. Her normally full lips have turned into a scared thin line. Even her hands are folded together so tightly that her knuckles are losing their color.

“It’ll be different with us,” I say.

“Dean…”

“Trust me. It will.” Placing my hands on top of hers, I give hers a gentle squeeze. “You’re not a mess, Zoey. And even if you were, that wouldn’t make me like you any less. I’m not giving up on you. I’m not going anywhere.”

She swallows. I can still see the distress in her eyes, but the longer I hold her gaze, the less intense it becomes. Finally, she closes the distance between us, laying her head on my shoulder. I wrap my arms around her and hold her, ready to stay like this for however long she needs me to stay like this.

“Are you sure?” she asks.

“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” I say.

“Okay,” she says quietly. “But…do you mind if we take it slow?”

“We can go as slow as you want,” I whisper into her hair.

“I’m sorry I didn’t say anything sooner. I shouldn’t have let you done that. Touch me, I mean.”

“No. I’m glad you did.” I kiss the top of her head. “You deserve every good thing in life, Zoey.”
