She kisses my cheek. “Thank you, baby. I’m so glad you liked it.”
“I loved it. Now…you said there’s an after party, right?”
She nods. “Yeah. But I’m exhausted. Let’s just stay for a little bit and then go home, okay?”
Twenty minutes later,Becca and I are in the truck driving home, the sun setting in the distance as miles of countryside pass us by. This has been my home for my entire life, but it’s felt so much more complete with Becca by my side.
I glance over at her, warmth filling my chest, and she turns and gives me the sweetest smile. There’s something…hidden…in that smile, though, too.
“What’s on your mind, beautiful?” I ask.
She shrugs mysteriously. “Nothing.”
“Come on. Tell me.”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Sure enough, a few minutes later, I find out exactly what surprise she has waiting for me. As soon as I turn the truck into the driveway, I spot the brand new play equipment set up in the yard. Even from far away, I can tell it’s superbly made.
“Well, look at that,” I say as we pull up to the house. I kill the engine and get out of the truck. Becca gets out on her side and comes around to meet me, wrapping her arms around me.
“I had it delivered while we were gone,” she says. “I wanted to surprise you.”
“Now all we need are a couple of kids to enjoy it,” I say, grinning down at her.
“Actually…” Becca chews on her lower lip, her eyes full of nervous excitement. “We’ll have one in a little under nine months from now.”
I’m stunned. “What? Becca, you’re…”
“Pregnant.” She nods, her eyes sparkling. “We’re going to have a baby, Adrian.”
For another few seconds, I remain stunned. The whole world feels like it’s just shifted. We’re going to have a child. Achild.
And then I’m laughing with joy and pulling Becca closer into me. I cup her cheeks in my hands and kiss her, the moment simultaneously tender and passionate and full of awe.
I’ve never been one to brag…but oh, what the hell.
I’m the luckiest damn guy in the world.
