“That’s how it’s done, kid.” He tosses over his shoulder. The new guy rolls his eyes as he leans forward resting his palms on his knees and panting.

“Who are you?” I ask the man on the ground with binoculars hanging from his neck.

He tries to stand but Dixon levels him again with an elbow to the shoulder blades and the man haunches forward. “If your thugs would allow me to get up, I can tell you.”

“Your mouth works fine where you are. Don’t make me ask twice.” I aim my gun at his head.

He puts his hands up, “We’re on the same side. I can explain why I’m here.”

“Then get up and make it fast.” He rises to his feet, and I square off with him. “Don’t waste any more of my time. Your stalling is grating my patience.”

“I heard you have a new bride. Callie, right?” He draws a cigarette from a pack in his pocket and presses it between his lips. “Such a shame the joyous occasion ended with bullets.”

“Your life is going to end with a bullet if you mention her again.” My glare cuts into him as he withdraws the cigarette from his mouth. “I still don’t know who the fuck you are.”

“Ok. Calm down.” He tosses the cigarette stump to the ground. “Don Marcohas gotten worried that you're making side deals and he’s not taking too favorably to it. He sent me to find out what you're up to.”

“You can tell Don Marcothat if he wants to know something about my business, he can ask me himself.”

“It would do you good to remember he brought you into this organization and he can make sure you leave it with nothing.”

“That may be so but last I checked he wasn’t running things anymore. He may have made me what I am but it’s his cut of my profits that keep him living in the lifestyle he’s accustomed to.”

“Then it’s safe to tell him his share will be deposited soon?”

“It’s more complicated than that but once I have retained legal ownership of Hawkins Transportation, he’ll see his fair share.”

Hewithdraws a cellphone and types out a text. “Message delivered. We’ll be in touch.” He pockets the phone and draws another cigarette between his fingers.

“I trust you can find your own way out.” I dismiss him, turning my back on him.

“Say hello to your wife for me.”

Red flashes before my eyes. An anger so immense, unlike any I’ve ever felt before, takes control of my limbs. Spinning around I pull my gun from the holster at my side and squeeze the trigger. The bullet flies from my Colt and lands straight between his eyes. Blood splatters out of the back of his head and his body drops to the ground. “I warned you not to mention her again.”

Nobody says a word. They don’t have to. My jaw begins to tic and my blood pressure kicks up a notch. I fucked up and my actions will spark a fuse throughout the entire organization. There will be a high price to pay for taking out one of our own.

“Message received and now here’s one for Don Marco. Send him back where he came from.” Everyone nods. I keep my eyes glued to the new guy who's standing still, eyes wide open fixed on the body. Connecting my focus with Dixon, I gesture to the kid who’s now turning an unflattering shade of green. “He’s only here because you vouched for him but if he’s not going to cut it, cut him loose. We don’t have time to change diapers.”

I climb into the driver side of the SUV, anxious to return home and hopefully find my new bride waiting for me. Lanah texted me to let me know that Callie met up with her friend Collin. All my intel on him says he’s a man I can trust with her, yet my ego tips over the edge at the thought of him holding her attention and taking up her precious time. Time that should be devoted solely to me. I remind myself I need to be patient with her while she adjusts to her new life. To our new arrangement. The last text I received, let me know she was safe back at the Tower but that someone had spooked her. I can’t help but worry about what effect this alteration might have on her adjustment.

Just another worry to add to the pile of shit I keep stepping in.

Chapter 8

Dominic

I can hear the music blasting down the hall as I make my way from the elevator toward my apartment. I texted Lanah that she could leave if Callie was safe inside. Every inch of this building is wired to a security system that is fed to my phone and armed guards are positioned in the main lobby. I own this building and everyone in it, making it the safest place in town. It must be. You can never take too many precautions with your livelihood and now it holds more worth than I ever thought possible. I don’t know what it is about this girl but she’s already under my skin and hasn’t done a thing to warrant these foreign feelings creeping through me.

I turn my key in the lock and push open the front door. A remarkable scent wafts through the apartment like I just strolled into a five-star restaurant. My nose leads the way through the living room toward the kitchen where I find Callie swaying her tight ass in time with the music pumping through the surround sound. Her sweet voice cracking at two octaves over the tempo when she belts out the chorus to the song that’s playing. A smile creeps across my face.

I stalk towards her, hunger for the food growling in my stomach and hunger to feast on her making my cock twitch. The tiny shorts and even smaller tank top she’s wearing sends shockwaves shooting through me.

She catches sight of me and scrambles backward. “Are you scared of me Princess?”

Her eyes drop to the white tile floor, “No.”

“Are you sure, Princess?” I shift closer to her.
