‘Where’s Rex?’ Helen smirked. She knew Elle had been having a passionate Instagram flirtation with the lead singer of Long Foolish Summer since they met at the festival, but the thought that a famous person would actually be coming to Sophie’s engagement party at the Hilton Metropole was too weird.

Helen had obviously had a little creep on Rex’s Instagram: he was tall, with bleached blonde hair that stuck out at a strange angle. His face also looked carved, like he had walked out of a video game. Whilst he was all a bit GQ model for Helen, she bet him and Elle would look really good together.

Elle pulled her hair over her shoulder and started smoothing it down. ‘I decided I wanted to come solo.’

‘Why?’

‘It’s still early days my love …’ Elle had taken out her compact mirror and was examining her eyelash extensions, ‘… and some things are better just experienced with friends, you know? But come on, where’s your guy?’

It was just like Elle to deflect, she wanted all the gossip in your life, but revealed very little. Helen suspected that the day she knew Elle was serious about a guy would be the day that she got a wedding invite.

‘He’s not “my guy” … at least not yet. I don’t know, I just want to make sure this time, and I didn’t want to lead him on …’ Helen was really using inverted commas a lot these days.

‘Love you are not “leading him on” by allowing him to share a lift with you here.’ Elle shook her head.

‘Do you think I’m just attracted to emotionally unavailable men?’

‘Do you like Ish?’

‘I am definitely liking him more and more …’

‘Well Ish is definitely emotionally available, so if you like him, you’re probably okay my love. I mean the guy is coming right along to your best friend’s engagement party and not getting cold feet thinking you want to hurry up and get married …’

‘I wouldn’t mind getting married one day …’ Helen batted the wistful look out of her eyes and tried not to focus on how lame she must have looked.

Elle rolled her eyes. ‘Do you want to know a secret?’ She leaned in and linked arms with Helen.

‘What?’ Helen accepted her arm grudgingly.

‘I actually think Ish is pretty hot …’ Elle caught Helen’s eye.

‘No way!’

‘Yes … and I go further, I think he’s actually hotter than Brody.’ Elle’s almond brown eyes looked into Helen’s, waiting for a reaction.

‘What?!’

‘Let me explain … Brody has this too cool, too pleased with himself look you know?’

‘And Rex doesn’t?’ Helen gave Elle a playful nudge.

Elle barely flinched. ‘You will seeamiga, you will see … but as for Ish, he’s actually confident you know? He’s kind of masculine, I like that he doesn’t have to constantly tell you how great he is …’

‘Like Brody did …’

‘Yeah man, it might be impressive on date one, but that’s gonna get boring. Ish, he’s cool and actually a good-looking man. Like when he brought us breakfast that time, and his chest …’

‘He has a good body.’ Helen thought back to the morning in the tent with his smooth brown chest, the line that led down his hips.

‘Big dick energy for sure …’

‘Elle!’

‘What! It’s the truth and you know it isamiga…’

‘Are we objectifying him?’

‘Maybe just a little.’
