“Youhaveto answer that,” she said, more pointedly this time. She didn’t say that it could be Dani, or it could be Kathy. Or any other member of the congregation. But it was the truth. He sighed, falling back against the window frame and fishing the phone out of his pocket. He looked at the screen for a moment and made a sound of pure annoyance.

“This was a reminder for a meeting I have in thirty minutes,” he said, his face contrite. “I completely forgot about it.”

“So, go to your meeting,” she said, but she didn’t make a move to get up from his lap. “It’ll give me time to shave my legs.”

David laughed out loud, swiping the screen with his finger.

“It was canceled,” he said, tapping a few keys to respond to the text message. His eyes were on the screen as he typed, but they flicked to hers for a moment, quick, before returning to what he was doing., “Kathy just let me know it’s been moved to next week.”

“That’s convenient,” she said, her mouth twisting in something that could have been amusement. His eyes flicked up to hers and he caught the expression on her face.

“You don’t believe me?” he said, offering the phone to her. Shoshana rolled her eyes, waving the phone away.

“So, about this thing you have to say,” she said, shifting on his lap. “I think you should go ahead and say it once, real fast, to get it out of the way. Like you said. Then you can say it as often as you want and it’s no big deal.”

“I love you,” he said, meeting her eyes as he shoved the phone back into his pocket. Something in her chest blossomed. She could feel her cheeks warming and she fought the urge to giggle like a schoolgirl with a crush. He was tracing her face, phantom caresses with his fingers that made her seek his touch like a cat. “I love you, and it is a very big deal.”

“David--”

Before she could say anything, else there was a loud crash as a half empty glass bottle of root beer fell to the tile floor. Deev’s big body was on the counter, unapologetic as his head dipped into the open container of mac and cheese. Her cat had a thing for gruyere.

“D’varim, you massive shit,” Shoshana called, pulling away from David’s questing fingers to inspect the mess on her floor. The cat didn’t lift his head as he attacked the cheesy pasta. He knew her well enough to know he had to be fast. Shoshana took a step toward the mess, then stopped, remembering she was barefoot. She would have asked David for help but there was a choking sound behind her. She turned back around to look at him.

“Whatis your cat’s name?” he said, his face saying he must have misheard.

“D’varim,” she said, hands on her hips. “Deev for short.”

“...so, you’re an Andrew Lloyd Weber fan?” His mystified expression was shifting into something that closer resembled outright amusement. She should have been offended, but the grin on his face was infectious.

“When I adopted him, it was right after college and I thought it was cleverer than it is. I need you to go grab those flip-flops for me by the back door,” she said, a little defensive and intent on the best way to take care of the mess.

“I’ll get the shoes, just give me a minute to enjoy this. Deuteronomy, really?” he said as he caught her hand, turning her bodily to look at him. He was laughing at her, but his eyes had that look again. He touched her jaw.

“Can you think of a better name for that monster?” she said weakly as his lips descended again.

“Ask me again some other time,” he said, his lips tasting like holy fire.

It didn't matter how they got to the bedroom. Or how the mess in her kitchen got cleaned up. Both were largely due to David, but that wasn’t an important detail. What was important, Shoshana thought, was that she’d forgotten how quickly the world ceased to exist when his lips were on her body.

Also, important: his fingers were nimble and insistent, and he used them to create magic.

“We need ground rules,” she said, breathless. She was laying on her bed, watching muscles shift in his bare back as he worked on taking off his shoes. He glanced over his shoulder at her, he was sitting on the edge of the bed, his shirt folded neatly over the bed’s footboard.

“Such as?” he said, standing to remove his jeans.

Shoshana wriggled on the bed, loving the way the blankets felt on her naked body. She fumbled in the bedside drawer, working to find the box of condoms. Her eyes flicked to his as she found what she wanted and flopped back onto the bed. He was watching her, amusement tugging at his lips, his hand on his body, touching absently. She licked her lips, then used her teeth to open the foil wrapper.

“You can’t say you want ground rules and then not fill in the blanks,” he said, putting a knee on the edge of the bed. She tossed the foil wrapper in the general direction of the wastepaper basket as he was climbing onto the bed and stretching out next to her. His fingers traced her bare hip, following the line of her body to the swell of her breast. Almost as an afterthought, he murmured, “What are you thinking?”

“You mean besides how much I love your body?” she said, smirking. Her hand went to him, her fingers tracing her own lines down his abdomen. She brushed his erection and he inched closer to her. Shoshana bit her lip, watching his face as she fit the condom to him, rolling it down over his stiffening cock.

“Besides that,” he said, his breath catching. Shoshana grinned, pleased with his reaction. David’s fingers caught her knee, urging her to open for him. His fingers curled over her mound and she made a noise low in her throat. He dipped his head, his nose brushing her cheek as his lips sought the tender flesh of her earlobe.

“You’re making it hard to think,” she pointed out, turning her head to find his lips. His mouth was hot on hers and she groaned. David’s body moved against hers and she could feel him against her.

“It was your idea to get naked,” he answered, his fingers working her, encouraging her desire to make her ready for him.
