“Lead the way.”

They followed Juliet closely, dodging the dolls in the room. They reached the hallway, and Nikita ran her fingers through her hair. Wherever they looked, bikers were found.

They made the short walk over to the Cutthroats clubhouse. Voices carried from the parking lot, smoke curling alongside the curses and innuendos when the men spotted them. A few whistled and catcalled. Mandi graced them with flirtatious winks, but Nikita stayed focused. If they needed to run, she’d be damned sure both of them made it out alive. Working undercover was her favorite thing to do, and she’d never lost a partner. She was not starting now.

Opening the side door, Juliet waved them in. The stench of stale cigarettes and spilled beer met them. Nikita scrunched her nose and was grateful when Juliet steered clear of the oncoming Cutthroats. They didn’t seem to notice them anyhow, too involved in their conversation about an upcoming shipment. If they had better cover, Nikita would insist on listening.

Mandi tugged on her wrist, and she turned to see Juliet pointing to a door at the end of the hallway.

“I’ll stay here in case someone comes by,” Juliet said, practically shoving them toward the basement.

Nikita met Juliet’s eyes and offered her silent thanks. Without this woman, they’d be no closer to finding out what the Greenback Cutthroats were really into.

Following her down the steep stairwell, Nikita slowly adjusted to the darkness. “Where the hell is the light?” she muttered, feeling the wall as they moved further into the pitch black.

“Ow! Son of a bitch!” Mandi stopped and Nikita ran into the back of her. “We’re at the bottom.”

Running her hand along the wall, she finally found a switch. When she flipped it up, both women gasped at the basement’s treasure.

“Drugs, how original.” Mandi walked over and perused the tables full of narcotics. “Not too stingy either.” She lifted a small, plastic bag. “This one is meth, but I see some cocaine over there too.”

Nikita walked through the maze of drug tables, the door at the back of the basement her goal. “C’mon, we don’t have much time.”

Mandi nodded and set down the scale with a green leafy substance.

Nikita jutted her chin to the door. “If we get caught….”

“Play the whore, yeah, I know.” Mandi teased

Nikita slowly cracked open the door and Mandi peeked in. “All clear,” Mandi said, walking inside the room.

Glancing at the small space, Nikita spotted a wall safe tucked behind the big office desk. “Let’s see what else they’re hiding.” She sat in the chair and started pulling open drawers. Typical office supplies met her gaze until she reached the lowest drawer on the right side. “Got your lock pick set?”

“As if I’d leave home without it.” Mandi fished out her small kit and immediately started at the lock. Within seconds, it popped open. “Tada!”

Nikita slid the drawer open all the way and grinned. A large envelope sat alone. Snatching it, she poured out the contents on the table. Ledgers and appointment dates were scribbled across some pages, while detailed routes were noted on others. She didn’t have the appropriate time to review it right then. They’d send it to the Denver office for analysis and keep a copy for themselves just in case.

“Get your phone ready. The Cutthroats will be back any time.”

Mandi quickly took photos of the documents. Once done, Nikita carefully put the files back in place and locked the drawer behind them. “All right, let’s get out of here.”

Just as they made it out of the office, footsteps sounded on the staircase. “Who the fuck left the light on? You know I hate wasting electricity.”

“Shit, that’s Pillar.” Nikita pushed Mandi to the left side of the room. They tucked into the underside of the staircase as the club president reached the bottom.

“Let’s get this done. Our friends in the dollhouse sanctum want to see the goods and I’d rather not keep them waiting.”

“What the hell happened to Juliet?”

Nikita shook her head, hoping their contact wasn’t lying on the floor above them with a broken neck.

“What was that?” a new voice asked.

Nikita gritted her teeth and Mandi grimaced. She mouthed, “Shit,” but the damage was already done. Within seconds, the sheet they were hiding behind pulled back and they were face-to-face with three Cutthroats.

“Look what we have here.” Pillar grabbed Nikita’s wrist and pulled her out of the hiding spot. “You lost, sweetheart?”

“Nah, just looking for a score,” Mandi improvised.
