“Not exactly.”

She barked out a laugh. “It’s cool. I’m a little murky too.” Mandi glanced around the room and lowered her voice. “The MC has three men rotating watch over where they’re keeping a ‘special package’ according to one of the members from last night. What about you? Find out anything juicy?”

“Um, yeah.” She cleared her mind of the assault. “Pillar said they’re keeping it in Snowshoe, so if the police or Feds find it, they’ll suspect Macha.”

“Good, I’ll call in tomorrow and let boss man know what we heard. Oh, Juliet said they’re having another party tonight.”

“Another one?” Her heart sank at the prompt nod in response. “Don’t they ever stop partying?” She wasn’t sure she could handle a repeat. Not this soon. She needed time to recover.I should’ve stayed with Kevlar.

Standing up, she found her burner cell phone and sent a message to her boss. If Kevlar kept showing up, eventually someone would get hurt. She’d never forgive herself if he was caught in the crosshairs of her war. Opening a new message, she sent a text to one of her friends at the main office. She needed to read her notes about Macha MC. If they were trustworthy, it wouldn’t be a stretch to include them on the OP. Her mind spun back to Kevlar. He’d promised he could be trusted, but she wasn’t sure what to believe. Neither of them was the same person as fifteen years ago. It wasn’t just her life on the line anymore. She had to think about Mandi.

Seeing the encrypted reply from the tech on the other end of the text message, Nikita powered down the device. She’d have her notes by morning. Then and only then would she think about bringing Macha in on the FBI’s sting. No matter what happened, she’d keep the people she loved safe.

“Your code has been verified. Please wait while I connect you.”

Nikita stomped her boots on the pile of leaves near the convenience store. A gush of cold air hit her, and she grimaced. Cold weather she could handle. Not being properly prepared for it, she couldn’t.

“Agent Stockdale, glad to hear from you.” The deep voice of Zane Gibson met her ears just as a semi whizzed by the store. “What news do you have?”

“I believe Agent Riggs updated you a few days ago.”

“Yes, she did. Our techs are still combing through the photos you sent. So far, they found a few similarities between the Greenback Cutthroat ledgers and an East Coast MC you took down last year. The intel about a package is circulating, but we’re trying to pinpoint it exactly. Too many MCs use the same lingo unfortunately.” Gibson cleared his throat. “Other than that, minimal chatter from our wiretaps.”

That was what she was afraid of. Nikita rubbed her lips together. Diablos was notorious for skimming law enforcement. They’d give the FBI just enough to tap them but then avoid using those lines until they wanted to. It was a technique specific to Diablos and, more specifically, her father. She’d read plenty of audio and court transcripts over the years, and they all pointed back to her father being the genius behind Diablos’ lack of member incarceration.

“All right. We’ll keep digging up what we can. The club dolls aren’t exactly forthcoming.” She nodded at a biker passing on the street. “Or their members.”

“All part of the MC life, Stockdale.” He chuckled. “Hell, I had a guy undercover for two years before he got anything we could move on. Buckle up. You’re in for a ride. If there’s nothing else….”

“Actually, sir, there’s something else I’d like to discuss.”

“What’s that?”

“Macha MC.” She shifted on her feet when he didn’t respond.

“What about them?”

Nikita watched two motorcycles pause at the stop light. Neither man looked her way, but she didn’t take her eyes off them or the shimmer of metal at their hips. “I recently reviewed the file I compiled and they’ve stayed off the FBI’s radar. Any ideas why?

Gibson cleared his throat. “They’re small fish compared to Diablos.”

“But can they be trusted?”

“Why do you ask?”

The light changed and Nikita watched the motorcycles glide out of sight. “Because I know someone in the club. He keeps showing up unexpected.”

“And you’re concerned for his safety?”

“Yes…no…in a way.” She cursed under her breath. “I think Macha could be an asset to our operation here.”

Nikita worried her lips together at the silence on the other end. Bringing in anyone from the outside, let alone a club, held risks.

“I’ll run it up the chain and let you know.”

She disconnected, the conversation clearly over. Her file wasn’t full of prison records, the usual for MCs. Macha seemed to be different and they just might be the key to cracking this case. Whether or not headquarters agreed was another story.
