“Surely I asked questions.” She couldn’t recall any. She only remembered happy times. Riding motorcycles with her father and his friends and playing with the other MC children. That was all she could think of when it came to Diablos.

Estevan nodded mindlessly. “You did, but I sent you off to a boarding school with children of similar familial backgrounds. The goal was to bring you home after a few years. Gently integrate you into MC life.” He furrowed his brows. “But I never got the chance to hand over Diablos to you. After boarding school, it became clear you were too much like your mother. Carefree and stupid.” He shook his head. “I’d hoped to bring you back into the fold once you’d gotten it out of your system but….”

“That’s when you were arrested.”

He meshed his fingers together. “And the rest is, well, history.”

Nikita exchanged a glance with Kevlar. His face remained void of emotion, but beneath, she saw the fury in his eyes. She felt the same. The same plus disappointment. Her childhood hadn’t been as innocent as she thought. There was so much she didn’t know and desperately wanted to hear. But I can’t.The reason for the trip wasn’t to understand her past but to save the future.

“Call off your sergeant.”

“Why would I do that?” He pointed to their chairs. “It got you here. After fifteen years, I’d say it was long overdue.”

“It almost got her raped,” Kevlar seethed.

Estevan chuckled. “Please, my men would never allow that.”

“But they did,” she confirmed. “And they shot at me.”

“But not to kill.” He clucked his tongue. “Never to kill. They know better than to hurt my heir.” He sat back, eyes fixed on her every movement. “Take over Diablos, mija, so I can finally rest. I haven’t had one day since I’ve been born. I’m tired.”

“No. Now tell me about the women Diablos and the Greenback Cutthroats are trafficking.”

He sighed, looking bored. “Why would I? I’ve nothing to gain and everything to lose.”

Thinking over the last few years, Nikita tried to recall a tidbit of information she could leverage that her father would care about. Finally, an idea came to her.

“Tell me about their dealings and I’ll visit you again.”

“Kita, don’t—”

Her glare silenced the rest of Kevlar’s plea. She needed her father to hand over the details. If promising another family session would get her there, she’d deal with the repercussions.

A dashing smile covered her father’s face. “There’s my girl. What do you want to know?”

Chapter Twenty-One

Kevlar

Parking the sedan,Kevlar did his best to ignore the scowl on Kita’s face. He tried for the last two hours to make conversation with her. She hardly said a whole sentence, opting instead to stare out the window, lost in her mind’s world.

“Kita, baby, you gotta talk to me eventually.” He rested his forearms on the steering wheel, eyes focused on her frazzled hair and matching face. The meeting with Muerte was harder than he expected. More so simply keeping his jaw clenched and fists curled while he watched Kita wrestle wits with her father.

Unbuckling her seat belt, Kita gathered her purse onto her lap. “Should I even believe what he said? He could’ve made it all up.”

His mind screamed the same, but he was an outsider. He’d never met her father before that day.

“It’s possible, but we won’t know until we track down his information.” Reaching over, he rubbed her knee. “I’ll be here for you, no matter what.” He searched for her eyes, but she avoided him. “Can you at least try to enjoy these last few hours alone together before all hell breaks loose?”

He tickled her side, a smile gradually spreading over her lips.

“All right, stop before I smack you.” She giggled, swatting at his hands.

“You’d never hurt me.”

She cocked an eyebrow and he laughed.

Leaning over, he moved her hair behind her shoulder and playfully bit her neck. “You know you missed me all those years. You wouldn’t hurt me now.”
