Pillar came into view and placed a can of cola on the table. “A private hangar outside Snowshoe. The military used it in the 80s for special ops.” He sat in the chair opposite her. “I was stationed here for two months before they shut it down.”

“I’m assuming you contacted my father.”

“Yep.” Pillar smirked. “His sergeant at arms will be in touch soon. Just sit tight, Agent Stockdale. You’ll be out of here within the hour.”

“Doubtful.” She opened the pop and took a drink of the off-brand drink. It did nothing to relieve her thirst for escape. “So, who in the FBI tipped you off?”

Pillar sat with arms crossed over his chest. “Not that easy.”

“Then who?”

“Your father. Well, in a roundabout way.”

She wracked her mind. She never told her father about the FBI plans. They didn’t cement them until two days ago.Shit…Nikita met Pillar’s humored eyes.

“Put it together, now, didn’t ya?”

“The FBI. It was one of Zane’s guys.”

“Nope, Zane himself,” a new voice stated, coming into the room.

She swiveled her neck to see Zane outfitted in FBI gear. He offered her a weak smile, and she scowled. “You bastard.”

“Sorry, Stockdale, but I saw an opportunity and couldn’t pass it up.” He pulled a chair away from the wall and sat next to Pillar. “You were too wrapped up in your daddy issues to see it coming too.”

“What do you mean?” Only recently reconnecting with her father couldn’t have been the reason for the misleading plan.

“I need to admit something.” Zane lifted his shirt, the mandatory Diablos tattoo scarred into his flesh. “I’m your father’s sergeant at arms.”

The room spun at his words. None of it made sense until that moment. She closed her eyes and fought the urge to lunge at him. It’d be a waste of energy. They’d tossed her weapon, and two against one wasn’t good odds with no backup in sight.

“You helped run Diablos from within the FBI.”

“Look at you getting one right.” He nodded. “I couldn’t have done it without you either. You were so determined to make your father pay that you barely noticed when his club always skirted your troops at the last minute. It hasn’t been easy, so kudos, kid. You’ve kept me on my toes.”

“How did you get caught up with Diablos?”

“I was one of the agents assigned to your father’s case,” Zane stated. “At first, I thought he was a scumbag. The more I talked to him, the more I realized how brilliant he was.” He grinned. “I mean, he successfully ran one of the largest drug-running MCs on the East Coast right under the government’s nose.”

She rolled her eyes. “Great, he’s your hero.”

“No, he’s my mentor. He got me thinking about how easy it’d be to keep Diablos going from within the FBI.” Zane tossed a candy bar on the table. “He’s also my meal ticket out of here.”

“Going somewhere tropical?”

“Actually, yes.”

She snorted and shook her head in distaste. “That’ll be the first place he looks for you. Nowhere is safe from Diablos.”

“You should know. You played right into his plan.” The FBI agent preened. “Once I made the connection between you, Nikita Morales not Stockdale, I was practically a shoo-in to the sergeant role. Muerte promised me an assload of money, and he’s delivered. Now it’s time I step down and hand the reins to someone else.” He slapped Pillar’s back. “This guy will work, and since your father’s VP screwed the Cutthroats on the drug deal, I think Pillar earned the extra money.”

“And you get a kickback from the Cutthroats too.”

“Naturally. Call it my never-ending finder’s fee.”

“Then why take me?”

Zane’s blue eyes turned cold. “Because the price of my retirement reduced significantly the moment you arrived in Waverley.”
