“Let’s hope your father comes to his senses, eh?” He nodded at a biker with a rifle, and the back door opened moments later.

The crushing stench of bodily fluids and lack of hygiene smacked her face hard. She lifted her hand to her nose. It did no good. The women shied away from the door, marks on their exposed skin. From tasers or knives, she couldn’t tell. They were in bad shape, though, that much she recognized.

“You’re an animal!” She stomped on Zane’s foot, and he backhanded her face.

“No, you’re the animal. At least until your father frees you.” He hoisted her into the back of the truck and the doors shut without another word.

Turning, Nikita braced herself for the worst. What she saw made horror films appear juvenile.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Kevlar

“What doyou mean you can’t trace her?” Kevlar glared at the FBI agent on the other end of the video chat. They’d tracked the getaway car down the mountain but then lost them at the plowed roads.

For the last hour, Rubble combed through Macha’s security footage, trying to see if they’d missed anything. After he came up empty, they reached out to the FBI’s Denver location, who then put them in contact with Kita’s direct boss.

Randy Penn stared back at him. “Her phone is turned off, most likely tossed. We can’t trace something that’s not there. I’m sorry.”

“What do you plan on doing about it?” This from Reaper, who seemed equally pissed about the ambush.

“Agents from Denver will be there shortly. They’ll take over the investigation and bring Agent Riggs home.” His eyes clouded. “I’m very sorry this all happened. There will be an internal investigation of course.”

Kevlar took a step forward, but Reaper’s hand on his shoulder silenced him before he spouted off at the man thousands of miles away.

“Please stand down,” Randy said before signing off. “The FBI will handle this.”

The screen went black, as did the faces in the room. Macha had been played, and they couldn’t pinpoint who to blame. The FBI, Cutthroats, or Diablos. Each one had moles, it seemed. And no one had caught them before it was too late.

“So, what’re we going to do?” Doc asked. “I’m sure as hell not standing down.”

Hawk nodded. “Neither am I. They killed Mandi. Whoever pulled the trigger needs to be held accountable. The FBI’s too busy chasing their tails to do it. We gotta step up.”

The rest of Macha’s members voiced their opinions, all pro kicking some ass.

Reaper banged the gavel on the table, silencing the rumblings. “Brothers, this isn’t what we signed on for.” His blue eyes skimmed the room slowly. “But I know we all want to see Nikita safe.” He nodded to Kevlar. “And to finish the work she and Agent Mandi Riggs started.”

Kita’s purpose for coming to Colorado ran through Kevlar’s mind. Her life goal was to save others. Whether it be by putting away dangerous MCs or saving women from being sold into horrific situations, she wouldn’t stop until the wrongs were righted.

“Women are precious to Macha,” Kevlar spoke up. “This isn’t new, brothers. We all but worship the women under our protection. Well, the women Kita was sent to help have no one to protect them. They need us even if to give them the chance at a better life. Our goddess would demand it.” He met Rubble’s gaze, pride lining the blue and green eyes. “Who’ll join me in protecting them?”

A chorus of “Ayes” shouted back to him. For the first time since seeing Kita gone, he smiled. His club would never let him down. It was the one constant in his life. Macha and Kita. He needed both to survive.

Sleep evaded him every time he closed his eyes to nap. After being up most the night before with Kita, the main thing keeping Kevlar going was adrenaline. Adrenaline and caffeine. He downed the last bit of the energy drink and crushed the can.

Doc gave him an odd glance. “How many of those have you had today?”

Kevlar grabbed a box of shells and shrugged. “Three, four, maybe.”

“And coffee?”

“A few cups.” He watched Doc’s usually cheerful demeanor turn concerned. “Look, I’m good. I just gotta find Kita, then I’ll be great.”

Walking over to him, Doc glanced around the clubhouse armory in the subbasement. It was filled with fellow bikers gearing up for the unknown. He took the seat next to him and lowered his voice. “I felt the same when Isa was kidnapped.”

Kevlar narrowed his gaze, recalling the situation. He’d just returned from deployment and came back to see Macha preparing for an all-out war with the Irish MC, the Twelve Brothers. He’d never seen the club react like that. Then again, the Twelve Brothers took the daughter of their Belfast chapter’s president.
