Rubble’s glare silenced the rest of Kevlar’s complaint. He was right of course. They couldn’t be seen until the end. Still, he couldn’t let the other women—the children—leave with the bastards who purchased them for God knew what horrid acts.

“Be patient, Kevlar. We’ll get your girl.”

Yeah, but will she be alive when we do?

Chapter Thirty-Six

Nikita

Holy shit,someone bought me.

Nikita’s eyes flooded with tears, none of them falling. She stumbled backward, Zane dragging her out of the small box taped on the floor. The women were told to not step beyond or face wrath. A few of them attempted to flee and were met with batons to their ribs. She was the last of the girls to be on the auction block. The room had slowly emptied, leaving her alone with Zane until her name was called. Nikita glanced around the darkness, searching for Yasmina. Only Diablos and Cutthroat men met her gaze.

“Five million dollars.” Zane chuckled darkly. “Damn, if I’d known you’d fetch such a price, I’d have nabbed you years ago and not bothered with Muerte at all.” He pushed her into a new room, the bright lights burning her eyes. Going from darkness to light and vice versa so often drained her energy almost as much as the entire auction endeavor.

“I thought about taking you back with the other girls, but nah. I won’t risk one of them hurting you or you riling them up.”

“I can’t do this.”

Zane shoved her into a nearby chair. The comfort of the plush did nothing to alleviate the murderous glint in his eyes. “I don’t give a fuck what you can or can’t do. You’ll sit here like a good little girl until your master picks you up.”

Her gaze dipped to the gun in his belt. It’d be so easy. One shot.

“Nuh-uh, don’t even dream about it.” He moved closer to her face, his nose grazing hers. His eyes dipped down the front of her dress and her gut twisted. “But we do have a little time. I don’t think your multi-millionaire would mind if I had a little taste.”

She backed away as far as she could in the chair. It did no good. She was pinned between his solid body and the soft fabric; both would soon be her doom.

“But I fucking do.”

Nikita’s breath caught at the familiar voice.

Surely, it’s not….

She looked past Zane and bit her tongue. She wasn’t hallucinating. “Kevlar.”

His face was dark, gun pointed to the back of Zane’s head. “Step the hell away, or I’ll put a bullet through your skull.”

Zane slowly moved backward, hands raised. She recognized the mixture of defeat and anger in his cold features.

“So you found us. Bravo.” Zane mockingly clapped his hands. “But I’m afraid you can’t have Nikita. She’s been sold.”

Kevlar’s grip on the gun tightened. “Yeah, to us.”

Three more men entered the room, guns aimed directly at Zane. He cursed savagely and tried for his gun. They all seemed to move in slow motion. Zane didn’t even get a shot off before four guns peppered him with bullets. The big man fell backward, missing her by inches.

“Kita, oh God. What did they do to you?” Kevlar knelt in front of her. His brown eyes were wide and full of heartbreak. He ran his hands along her body, searching for unseen injuries. She couldn’t wince. She couldn’t move. The shock from the last twenty-four hours wouldn’t let her.

“Kita, baby, talk to me.”

Kevlar’s voice brought her to life, but her mouth refused to speak. “Shit, she’s in shock.”

In one smooth move, he swept her into his arms and followed Rubble out the door. Hawk brought up the rear, and she tampered down her emotions at the thought of Mandi. Eyes swiveling to the last man, she didn’t recognize him, but she was damned grateful Kevlar brought backup.

He came for me.

She swallowed the veracity behind his actions. He might’ve done it because of their past, but she didn’t suspect so. Kevlar was a long-term commitment kind of guy. Feeling his strong muscles and hearing the whizzing bullets quickly cleared the shocking events from earlier.

They almost reached the exit before she found her tongue. She couldn’t just leave. She’d make sure the rest of the women and children had a chance at a better life. He rejuvenated her mission and she wouldn’t forget why she was there in the first place.
