“What’s wrong? Am I hurting you?”

“No, nothing like that, I just….” She searched his unique pair of eyes. “I don’t know your name. Your real one, I mean.”

Rubble smirked. “Is it that important?”

“I want to know who I’m kissing.” She traced his jaw. “The man I can’t live without.”

“When you put it like that, how can I resist?” He set her feet on the hardwood. “Kassian Hardy.”

The name fit like a glove. Common yet unusual, not unlike his characteristics. “I like it.”

“Well, don’t let my brothers know. They’ll never let me hear the end of it.”

“Doesn’t Kevlar know?”

He fixed the hem of her shirt. “Yeah, he and Reaper are the only ones. And now you, I guess.”

“Thank you.” She wrapped her free arm around his waist and hugged him tight. A sense of comfort washed over her.

“Anything for you, baby girl.”

And she believed him. He wouldn’t lie to her.

CHAPTER24

RUBBLE

Church startedlike every other time. Boulder recapped the last meeting then moved on to the club’s financial matters. None of it felt the same. This time, Rubble’s ass was in the hot seat. His happiness was on the line.

He shifted his weight in the comfortable leather chair, left leg bouncing beneath the solid wood table. Doc sat across from him, a knowing grin on his face. Doc had walked in on them in bed an hour ago, hoping to check on Jupiter before church. Since her accident, Rubble hadn’t allowed himself to be intimate with her, so his brother hadn’t seen much. She argued for the opposite treatment, but she was recovering and needed some time. He wouldn’t put her at risk.

Jupiter was halfway out the door when he left for church. She and Yasmina had to make a run to the grocery store, their supplies dwindling thanks to the busy time for the town. He wouldn’t see her until that night unless he snuck away from his rounds early.

The conversation moved on to the Xtreme Winter Games. Thus far, the club had raked in quite the amount of dough thanks to their numerous businesses. The lodge was profitable, of course, and the tourists seemed to enjoy all the club’s covert dealings.

“Sergeant, you got something to bring before the club?” Reaper’s voice snapped Rubble from his thoughts. He glanced around the room. Not a single seat was empty.

“Many of you have met Jupiter Quinn.” They answered with a round of nods, so he continued. “I recently found out the reason she came to Snowshoe.” His leg wouldn’t stop jiggling so he stood and placed his fists on the tabletop. “About a year ago, she left an abusive relationship. Been on the run ever since. She reached out to Queenie for help and I’m damned glad she did.” He watched the club’s reactions. A few members remained passive, but the majority were pissed. And for good reason. They wouldn’t be in Macha if they treated women like shit.

“Her ex found out where she is and instead of running, I—she wants to stay.” Rubble paused and waited for someone to speak up.

Kevlar didn’t disappoint. “When’s he gonna get here?”

“Not sure. According to a recent text, he knows where she is, so he could be here within the week. He also could’ve sent that to spook her into taking off again. He’s hired men to follow and capture her. I guess they finally caught up.” He met Kevlar’s eyes and saw the wheels turning in his mind.

“You think he’ll kill her?”

Rubble grabbed the folder from under his seat and tossed it on the table. “Here’s the shit I have on him. After talking with Jupiter and seeing photos of what he did to her in the past, yeah, it’s very possible he’ll kill her and not think twice.”

Brewer stole the folder and opened it. Kevlar and Cueball moved in for a closer look as he flipped through the information. “How’d you find all this?”

When Rubble paused, Kevlar chuckled. “Kita, right?”

Rubble nodded. “She offered, and I had to protect the club.” He looked to their president, who sat back with fingers meshed on the table. “Prez, the call is yours. I’d like to keep Jupiter under Macha protection until her ex is handled.”

“Handled?” Reaper’s brows rose. “How so?”

Rubble’s cheek twitched. Despite all the ways he wanted to deal with the slimeball who dared raise an angry hand toward Jupiter, he wouldn’t go off the deep end. “The Macha way.”
