The pounding in Jupiter’s ears was different now. The truth in his eyes spoke to her even more than the words that passed his lips. Rubble loved her.More than I deserve. She couldn’t abandon this kind of connection. Snowshoe was home. He was her home. But a small part of her worried for his safety. Lyle wouldn’t stop until she was either his or dead. She couldn’t put Rubble in the crosshairs. After the fight the other night, he wasn’t at one hundred percent.Lyle’s guys will chew him up and spit him out.

Jupiter reached up and smoothed his beard, kissing him gently. “I won’t try to leave. I swear.”

She meant every word. Even the ones she kept to herself.

Jupiter stoodoutside the door where Macha’s men currently discussed her ex’s sudden appearance in Snowshoe. She pressed her ear against the door but couldn’t hear a damn word. They all spoke in low tones, the hum the only thing she could decipher. Only ten minutes passed before the door opened, spooking her away from her obvious spot outside.

She moved back and watched the club members file out of the room. None looked jovial as they had earlier in the day. Each had determination written on their faces. Her stomach dropped, already knowing what that meant. They were going to confront Lyle.

Rubble was the last to leave with Kevlar at his side. He stopped just shy of her, his handsome face strained. “Baby girl, what’re you doing out here?”

“I want to help.”

“No.” His automatic dismissal pissed her off.

“Why not? I know Lyle better than any of you.” Rubble started walking and she hurried to keep up. Despite her long legs, his were longer. “Rubble, please, let me come with you.”

Rubble came to a sudden halt and whirled around. His piercing eyes bore into her, his face a mixture of fear and stubbornness. “You’re not going anywhere near that asshole if I can help it.”

She lifted her chin. “What’re you going to do, put me on house arrest?”

A hint of a smile graced his lips. “Tempting, very tempting.”

Rubble started walking again and Jupiter groaned. “I can distract him so you can make a move.”

They finally reached Rubble’s room. “I’m not putting you any more at risk. Nobody knows his plan. He could be packing serious heat.” He gently cradled the side of her face. “I won’t lose you, Jupiter.”

She leaned into his large hand and closed her eyes. He meant well, he truly did, but so did she. They could defeat Lyle together if only he’d let her help.

“And that’s why Hawk’s staying behind to protect you.”

Jupiter’s eyes flicked open, and she suddenly saw the shorter man behind Rubble. “I don’t need—”

Rubble’s mouth over hers silenced the rest of her reply. She melted into his embrace, the sturdiness of his arms wrapping her in a hug she never wanted to leave. When he finally let go, she noticed the sheen of moisture in his stunning eyes.

“If you’re there, I won’t be able to concentrate. Please, baby, don’t fight this.” He brushed his lips across her forehead. “Just stay.”

Jupiter wanted to pound her fists against his massive chest and yell at him for his quiet yet swaying plea. “All right, I’ll stay.”

He kissed her cheek, his beard tickling her. “Good girl. I’ll be back soon.”

She watched him walk down the hallway. He didn’t stop to look back. He trusted she’d be in his room when he returned. Jupiter glared at Hawk. She’d try. For Rubble she’d try to resist the urge to run.

CHAPTER27

RUBBLE

He readher eyes so easily. Jupiter wasn’t going to try and leave. She’d just up and do it.

Rubble reluctantly dropped his hold on the woman he desperately wanted to tie to his bed until this matter was settled. He wouldn’t.No matter how tempting.

“We knew he’d come eventually,” he said as his phone vibrated in his jeans. He fished it out and read a new text message from Doc. “The boys are following him. We’ll get this settled once and for all, baby girl.”

“I know you will.”

He walked to the door, ignoring the blatant lie. No matter what he did, Jupiter was wary of the outcome. He gritted his teeth, anger growing in his gut. She didn’t trust him, and it tore him up inside.
