His easy smile drooped, and Jupiter felt her stomach drop. She couldn’t let him see her scared. She was better than that. The last year proved she could face him without shriveling to his whims.

“Come, darling, I have a fine merlot in my room.” He turned on his heels.” No doubt you’re dying to drink something other than the swill these people call wine in Colorado.

“No.”

He swiveled to face her again and Jupiter held back her tears at the pure evil in his dark eyes. “Such a fiery tongue you have suddenly. It’s almost as if you’ve forgotten your place, pet.”

Jupiter steadied her breathing. She wouldn’t let him slide that easily. “Ready to sign the divorce papers?”

Lyle chuckled, lifting a cigar to his lips, and inhaling the rich flavor. “Over my dead body.”

“That can be arranged.”

CHAPTER33

RUBBLE

This damn womanwill be the death of me.For the first time ever, Rubble didn’t mind the sentiment. He’d lay down his life for Jupiter. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, wishing it were the handlebars of his Harley instead. The cigarette hanging out of his mouth tasted like shit, but he couldn’t calm the hell down without it either.

“Brother, you need to let off on the gas pedal a bit.” Kevlar grabbed the handle above the door as the truck took the turn faster than expected. “Seriously, Rubble, crashing will get us nowhere.”

“She thinks she can be the sacrificial lamb for Macha.” Rubble shook his head, inhaling the nicotine and flicking ash out the cracked window. “I swear to the goddess, I’m going to bend her over my knee and not let her go until both cheeks are red as cherries.”

Kevlar chuckled but attempted to pass it off as a cough when Rubble glared his way. “She’s a Macha woman through and through. I don’t know why you expected her to roll over and submit. She’s been running from this douche for almost a year. I’d want some justice served by my own hand too.”

“Justice?” He stopped at a red light. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, shit. I should’ve told you earlier. Isa saw Jupiter cleaning a gun this morning.” Kevlar straightened his cut. “Jupiter said it was hers. Isa didn’t even tell me until an hour ago. I’m sorry, brother.”

Rage fueled Rubble to press harder on the gas the moment the intersection was clear. His woman was in the grips of an abusive man and had managed to sneak in a sidearm. He couldn’t be mad about that. In fact, it made him proud. He was angry at himself that he wasn’t watching her every second until the matter was put to bed. He knew better. His damn emotions got in the way.

“Damn woman. I just hope it isn’t used against her,” he grumbled.

Snow blasted the windshield and he flipped on the wipers. Jupiter survived years under a cruel man’s thumb, and he’d seen her shoot a weapon. His girl could protect herself.

“I know you’re not used to this.”

Rubble shot the other man a confused glance.

“Not being in control,” Kevlar added. “Nobody suspected she’d waltz right into his hotel.”

Jupiter’s sweet face swam in front of Rubble’s eyes. She was so innocent, yet a secondary nature simmered under the surface. “She’s trying to protect us.”

“Even more reason to love her.”

“Loving her isn’t the issue, brother.” He pulled into the hotel parking lot. “I’m afraid of how much I love her. If something happens to her….” His voice dropped to a hoarse whisper. “I’ll lose my very soul.”

Kevlar clicked a magazine into his gun. “Then we better not lose either one of you.”

Rubble nodded and climbed out of the truck. More Macha bikers were on their way to the hotel. He’d sent a text to his brothers the instant he left the bar. As appealing as rushing in and shredding the hotel room with bullets sounded, he couldn’t be brash. One stray bullet and the love of his life would be gone forever.

Motioning to the incoming vehicles full of his brethren, Rubble waited until the crew was unloaded and ready for action. Reaper wasn’t among them, opting instead to keep a few members behind in case of a double-cross. He’d have thought of that himself if his heart weren’t involved in this rescue mission.

“Hawk tapped into the security system.” Rubble glanced at the man who nodded. “This guy has guns on every floor. He moved to a bigger suite on the top floor. It’s tucked in the corner, so Klink and Snoopy, you take the fire escape. Cueball and Doc will each take three prospects and clear the hallways. Kevlar and I will go up the service entry and sneak up the rear stairway once it’s been cleared.”

Rubble felt snow land on his cheeks. The cold didn’t bother him. The worry lining his brothers’ eyes did. “If you can’t handle this, leave now.”

The Macha men glanced between themselves, but no one moved.
