“What?” She snapped her gaze away from the Chevy that Rubble was repainting. “Why are you asking that?”

“Because when I went back to get my information, one of the bikers sought me out. He saw you in the cantina and asked if you were available.”

“So?”

Brewer did his damnedest to keep his anger simmering on low. This woman made him crave a shot of whiskey chased by five more. “He made it pretty clear he wanted to finish what he started last summer before passing you around the club.”

Her face turned as white as a sheet, the blood draining instantly. “Oh, God.”

Standing up, he slowly closed the distance between them and took both her hands in his. “I need you to be one-hundred-percent honest with me.”

She searched his face, waiting for a question.

“Do you know a biker named Sully?”

She shook her head. “No, why?”

“Probably nothing, but I wanted to check.” Brewer didn’t fully know the connection with the old biker and Delphi, but for the time being, Sully wasn’t the biker he was after.

“Is that all?”

“No.”

Delphi caught her bottom lip between her teeth, and he had to remind himself of the urgency of the matter at hand.

“You know more about Shovelhead, don’t you?”

If he thought she was pale before, Delphi turned practically transparent. “Wh-what?”

“Answer me.”

Lowering her gaze to her boots, she let out a breath. Her bottom lip trembled, and his heart instantly seized. “Yes.”

“And what is that?” He lifted her chin with his fingers. Pain overwhelmed her eyes and transferred straight to him.

“I didn’t want to believe that my mom cheated on my dad.” She sniffled. “But she did. She slept with a biker, and I was the product of their affair.”

“What’re you saying?”

“On his deathbed, my dad said that Shovelhead is my biological father.” A forced laugh passed through her lips. “No wonder my parents made a big deal about me steering clear of bikers, huh? They didn’t want me finding out who I really am.”

Brewer felt as though she’d kicked him in the balls. Unearthing family skeletons was one thing, but this made the situation more complicated. “Shit.”

“I wanted to help any way I could. Even offered to do a blood transfusion for my dad.” She rubbed her lips together. “But the doctor told me I couldn’t. My blood type wasn’t a match. I screamed at them. I was so sure they gave me the wrong results. That’s when he told me.” She walked over to the bay door and looked out at the busy street. “I didn’t want it to be true.”

Brewer followed her and gently hugged her from behind.

“I had a perfect childhood. Sure, I was kind of chubby and was bullied because of it, but I was happy.” She hugged his arms over her chest. “In retrospect, I always knew I was different. It’s why I went in search for my biological dad. I did some research and found out he betrayed Macha. I still wanted to meet him. I wanted to meet the person who helped create me. He’s family, and he’s all I have left.”

“Blood doesn’t make you family, Delphi. Love does.” He kissed the top of her head, his mind spinning over the connection only he knew about. “Shovelhead has done a lot of bad shit, but not knowing you is definitely the worst.”

Her body shook against him, and he gripped her a little tighter. Receiving such a bombshell at the time both his parents died would’ve messed him up too.

“Why are you nice to me?” she asked, wiping her face and turning around. “I’m rude and horrible to you. Probably a lot like Shovelhead.”

Brewer cradled her jaw, tipping up her face to meet his gaze. “I like you, Delphi. It’s because of your brash rudeness too. Sweet girls aren’t my vice. Sassy ones are.”

“I’m not sassy, I’m—”
