“Mum. Just let me talk to him.”

Mrs Mackinnon scowled at me, reluctantly stepping back.

“Caroline, I saw the report and I just flipped out and -”

“I know, I know. It looked very bad. I get why ye acted the way ye did, but ye were way out of line.”

“I didn’t treat ye with respect, and for that I wholeheartedly apologise.”

Caroline hesitated. “Ye got one thing wrong on your list of why Stuart sucks. You’re not a worse boss than your Da.”

I stood a little straighter at the unexpected comment.

She shrugged. “Ye let me do real accounting work but your old man didn’t. Gel tips notwithstanding, I found other mistakes in the reporting but I didn’t have enough time to follow up on it, and then Amanda came and the audit started.”

“So, someone is stealing from us?” I paled.

“Maybe. I think so? For months now I’ve been thinking something is up with our monthly reports but I can’t quite put my finger on it. But with being your PA and doing extra work for the accounts department, I haven’t had two seconds to look closely at stuff, or even know how to tell ye, without ye going mental.” She huffed. “And well, ye did anyway. I’ve been keeping notes in a separate file but then Stephen two-timed me and dumped me, and I kind of fell apart.”

I opened my mouth but Caroline waved her hand.

“So, how are ye going to say ye sorry?”

“I’ll do anything. Come back, please.”

She folded her arms, raising an eyebrow. “I’m listening.”

“A raise,” I blurted out.

“How much?”

“Eh… 5%?” I was so flustered I said the first number that came into my head.

“I’ll have 10% and a new dress to replace the one your cousin ruined.”

“Ten percent!” She said firmly. I’d no idea what a tough negotiator my P.A. was.

“How many other personal assistants with accounts experience do ye know in this town? One who cares as much about the business as I do?” She sniffed. “One who will still forgive ye when ye step well out of line?”

I winced. “Truly, I’m so sorry. I -”

“She said a ten percent raise!” her mother yelled from inside.

“Done.” I gritted my teeth as another spasm ripped up my spine. “Does Amanda know ye kept notes?”

“I… No. I didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of the hot-shot accountant from London.”

“Ye definitely should show her. And ye can step back from P.A. duties to help her while she’s here.”

“Okay. Great.” She flashed a quick smile, her face turning serious again. “Did ye really bang Amanda in ye office?”

My heart stopped as the ice pack slid into my boxer briefs. I closed my eyes and nodded with a sigh.

“Rumours are flying around everywhere.” She tapped her nose. “Doesn’t surprise me though. Ever since she arrived, ye have stared at her like she’s dessert.”

Heat flooded up my neck and face as I discreetly tried to get the useless ice pack out of my bum cheeks.

“I think I messed it up with her.”
