“Might be an important board matter,” I rasped.

Amanda leaned back and gave me a look. Oh fuck.

“We are having a romantic weekend without interruption. You promised!”

I licked my lips. “Can I just quickly check who -?”

She let out a cry of disbelief and stood up.

I grabbed my mobile. “It’s Caroline. Let me just -”

“Fine!” She waved a hand and stomped off to the kitchen. “Maybe I’ll draw a bath and have a soak instead!”

This was not good. I answered the phone.

“Did it work?” Caroline yelled down the phone.

I winced. “Don’t know yet.”

“Haven’t ye…”

“No!”

“Bloody hell, Stuart. Why’d ye answer the phone?”

“Quit calling then! I’ll do it soon and will let ye know.”

“Ugh, fine. And Stuart,” Caroline paused.

“Aye?”

“Good luck.”

“Okay, thanks. I mean that. Thank ye.”

She hung up and I turned my phone to silent.

I’d promised Amanda this was a work-free weekend. This was our time, away from the office, monthly finance figures, board reports and production schedules. I only had a month before she flew back to Australia to see her family for a quick visit, or so she thought.

Dating her for last three months had been simply amazing. Amanda moved from London the day after Valentine’s Day to ‘live’ in the flat beside me. In reality, her clothes were hung up next door, but she slept in my bed every night, the only exception being when she travelled for a weekend or a week here and there. Most of the time I joined her to see Barcelona, Wales, even Iceland for short trips.

Work still meant travelling for business, whether it was London, Edinburgh or around the Highlands, after I handed over the role of CEO to Robert. I worked on the stills again, as well as sitting on our company’s board, and often travelled to talk with other distilleries and their still teams.

But this weekend was just about us; no interruptions, no spreadsheets.

Well, just one.

Amanda had poured herself a generous glass of the twenty-five-year old single malt when I walked in, running my fingers through my hair, tugging on the ends.

“The call was for ye, actually.” My nerves were shot. I’d rather kick the penalty goal in extra time with England and Scotland tied than look her in the eye. “Caroline says ye have to check your email urgently.”

I shifted my feet, preparing for Amanda to explode over work interrupting our weekend away.

As I should be. Her eyes were hard as steel and her cheeks were red. She was about to gokaboom!Amanda gritted her teeth.

“Fine. Just fine.” She pushed past me and grabbed her laptop. “Do we even have Wi-Fi here?”

I cringed. Fuck, this had better work. “Yeah. I’ll get the code.”
