“I was.” I waved to the box. “I brought back your blanket and first aid kit. Topped it back up with supplies. I still had it in Lorraine so I used it when we found you and Liam. Blanket washed and still smells faintly of smoke.”

Stacey stroked the blanket.

“I’m staying at the pub again. John still had my room reserved under my name so I’ve got my old room. Would you have dinner with me tonight?”

“People do that, have dinner,” Stacey whispered. “In pairs, in packs. Sometimes alone.”

I grinned.Just say yes, please say yes.

A second passed, then several more, and finally, she spoke.

“Yes.”

Heard today that Doc Larcombe has sold the Stanmore Medical Practice. Anyone know who bought it?

Pam commented: an announcement is coming soon

Bruce commented: Come on, Pam. Just tell us!

Aaron commented: Yeah Pam…

Pam commented: you’ll find out soon enough LOL

Harry was pacing at the entrance to the pub’s dining room, looking nervous. I smoothed the front of my coat, the cold stinging my bare legs. Snow was forecast next week and here I was with no stockings and patent heels that pinched my toes.

Christ in a Camaro, this had better work.

Harry paused as he saw me walking in, looking me up and down.

“Shall we—”

“Can we go somewhere—”

We both laughed awkwardly.

“You first,” Harry said, pushing a hand through his hair.

“Can we talk before we eat? In private?”

“Yeah, sure. Of course. I want to talk, too.” Harry cleared his throat again. “In this town, that leaves us with two places. Lorraine or my room upstairs.”

I took a step closer to him. Harry’s breath hitched.

“Your room is fine.”

We walked in silence upstairs. Harry’s jaw muscles twitched as he closed the door to his room.

“I have something to show you.” He cleared his throat. “I was going to wait after dinner but I’d like to show you now. I found out why I can’t remember you from med school.

“Oh, Harry.”
