“I’ll go and say hi to the duty staff and nurses. But I’ll check in again before I leave to make sure you can get home and say goodbye.”

I nodded and Harry left as residents shuffled or wheeled into the room, some thoroughly checking him out.

“Welcome back, Stacey,” Beryl, resident troublemaker, said, jerking a thumb towards Harry. “Who’s the tall glass of water?”

“That’s Dr Harry. He’s Dr Larcombe’s replacement.”

“Ohh, fresh blood,” Beryl replied, rubbing her hands.

“He’s not staying.” I plugged in the CD player and flicked on the power. The CD kept spinning and finally the display flashedEr.Error.

I needed a Plan B.

“Hey, everyone. We’ve got a slight problem,” I called to the group. “CD player is on the fritz but I might be able to find something on my phone.”

“Do we have to dance to something composed in the eighteenth century?” a voice called out.

Granny Lynn. An orderly parked her wheelchair on the fringe of the room. She was dressed like a modern day version of the Dowager of Downton Abbey. She waved and the light caught the crystal rings on her fingers. At least I thought they were crystal. Could be real diamonds for all I knew.

I grinned, immediately walking over, and giving her a big hug.

“I have so much to tell you at the end of the class,” I whispered.

She squeezed me tight. “I have a feeling it’s about a certain course?”

“Yes, and I have my portfolio with me.”

Granny Lynn let me go. “Good, let’s talk after class. For as long as you can spare. And I have clearance to dance tonight. My physio encouraged me to shake my booty, and I quote what she said word for word.”

“I’ll see what I can find on my phone for booty shaking.” I faced the room. “Okay, everyone. I’ll have a track soon for our first dance. Let’s partner up.”

We barely made it through one song due to my old phone’s tinny speakers before the group complained.

“We can barely hear that, love. Turn it up, Stacey,” a man in a safari suit said.

“It’s causing feedback in my hearing aids!” someone else piped up at the back.

“Sorry, Arthur. It’s full volume. And I’m not sure how it’s doing that to your hearing aids, Caz. If we could be a little quieter while we dance, we might hear the music.”

“But I like talking while I dance,” Coco pouted, adjusting her pink feather boa.

“Perhaps we can play something more modern?” Caz suggested.

“Oohhh, what about the jive or the twist?” Beryl added.

A knock on the door made everyone turn.

“Sorry to interrupt, everyone,” Harry said. “I just need to check in with your dance teacher.”

“Ohhh, the tall glass of water,” Beryl elbowed me in the ribs. “Introduce us, sugar plum.”

“Come in, Harry.” I rolled my eyes. “Everyone, this is Dr Harry Cain. He’s with us for eight weeks at the practice as Dr Larcombe’s replacement. The Doc is on leave.”

Everyone ‘ooed’ and ‘ahhed’ and said hello.

Pam still hadn’t briefed me about why the Doc was away.Mental note: follow up with Pam tomorrow.

Arthur shook his hand and Beryl went for the full body hug, her hands scandalously low on Harry’s bum.
