Stacey swallowed hard. “I’m sorry about driving in the race without any medical clearance.”

“You don’t need to apologise to me. You didn’t know I was a doctor at the track. And I’m not your doctor either.”

“No, but … I shouldn’t have taken Phil’s place when I didn’t have clearance to drive. If I’d got caught, the team could have been disqualified. I owe you an apology. I made you lie for me.”

“Your uncle seems okay with you racing without it.”

“I think he’s still so excited with my track time that he hasn’t really thought about how stupid it was.”

“Do you like taking risks and breaking the rules, Firebird?”

Stacey’s eyes glittered before she looked away. “I admit, for some things, yes. Especially in high school but even then, people got hurt. Now, not so much. Things like the fire brigade or my job, I never break the rules. Rules are important.”

Like about dating doctors. What had some doctor done to her in the past?

Would she ever consider breaking her rule about dating doctors?

“I told you that I’ll have to take some big risks to chase my dream and that doesn’t mean I’m breaking any rules or putting anyone in danger. It’s important to me that you know that.”

I didn’t realise my stomach was knotted up until I felt the tension leave my body.

“I’m always asking you to cover for me and you barely know me,” Stacey whispered.

“And yet, we keep confessing our secrets to each other.” I stepped closer. “Your secret is safe.”

“Thank you.” Her eyes flicked down to my lips, her tongue darting out to wet hers.

A mournful groan made both of us jump.

“Reggie,” Stacey exhaled. “I’m coming, boy.”

Even Ryan’s cattle dog was determined to cockblock me. Reggie let out another howl from the shed door, then a car horn blared. Reggie wheezed.

“I have to lock up and go,” Stacey said. “Can I show you the trucks another time?”

“Yeah, of course. See you tomorrow for a lift to work?”

She nodded. As I walked out, Ryan squinted at me from his ute all the way to my car.

When I got into Lorraine, they had left.

Can someone tag me on the backburning training post? I can’t find it. Thank you xx

This was nuts. Crazy. Bonkers. Stark raving mad.

I scrubbed my face and sighed.

I’d promised George Larcombe I’d ensure the new software system was rolled out before he came back. I was doing the complete opposite. Every time Stacey showed me how to use the system, tabs and buttons became a blur, her perfume floated around me, driving me insane.

I barely spoke to her on the drive into work. Stacey, too, didn’t say much. She’d mumbled something about a tough night and left it at that.
