Andy: there’s a name for when you pay for company, Dr Tradie

I scrubbed my face, my stomach and heart dropping.

Me: Shit. I’m even more fucked than I’d thought, aren’t I?

Steve: No one ROFLs anymore @Andy

Mel: Oh hon. Yes.

Steve: yes. You’re more fucked.

Andy: people still ROFL!

Andy: think about it, nurses want doctor dick because they see us in action on the wards, saving lives, doing epic things with patients. AKA competence porn.

Andy: not being able to use patient records software won’t make her hot for you.

Mel: I just have a feeling you may have lost ground here… Sorry Harry.

I let out a strangled sigh. They were right. I was an idiot.

Me: There’s another problem

Andy: of course there is

Me: I haven’t told you this but she has a thing against doctors.

Me: told me upfront she would never ever date a doctor

Mel: what’s with that?

Me: no idea. She just looked so sad when she said it.

Me: I’ll sort out the patient records tonight.

Mel: and, above all, be a friend. Listen to her, support her, acknowledge her.

Steve: You can do it. You’ve been hapless up to this point (back seat shag notwithstanding). Show her your Bear Grylls.

Andy: good luck, man.

Mel: We believe in you!

The group sent a tsunami of GIFs and emojis in support of me discovering my competence with software. I cursed, tossing my phone aside. I had less than two hours to transform into the Bear Grylls of doctors.

Stacey

I was still shitty with Ryan and exhausted from helping Mum last night with a likely gastro bug. I didn’t get to paint; instead, I’d bleached the bathroom and mopped floors, and made sure she had water and a clean bucket in case she was sick.

I yawned. I knew sleep deprivation had robbed me of patience but seriously, this software was so easy to use. I’d no idea why Harry was struggling with my instructions. Even Dr Macintyre, who was seventy-four and did one day a week at the practice, had got it. Was I a bad person for being thrilled to get the overtime even if I’d rather be asleep?

I stifled another yawn, watching as he saved and closed the patient’s file.

“Twenty-seven to go,” I sighed.

Harry took the next file from me and put it down on his desk.
