“Great idea. Hopefully, locals will listen to the now famous Stacey Turner.”

“They’d probably listen to the famous Dr Cain more than me,” she grinned.

I leaned against the car beside her. “How are you feeling now after tonight?”

“Good. Tea and biscuits helped.” Stacey chuckled.

“What’s the laugh for?”

“Mum wants to have you over for dinner with our family, like as a guest of honour. I think she kind of worships you after tonight.”

“Can’t say no to my fans,” I grinned wider.

Stacey laughed, pulling out her phone. “Far out, our video from tonight has more than 15,000 views. And you have more fans in the comments. Pretty sure they’d like to cook you dinner too.”

I pushed away from her car and faced her. “There’s only one person I want to have dinner with.”

She looked up from her phone and met my eyes.

“The slide, everything you did and how you handled tonight.” My voice had deepened. “It was sexy as fuck.”

“But you didn’t kiss me,” Stacey murmured. “After you’d checked my knee.”

“Oh, I wanted to kiss you. When you’re ready to kiss me—and I know you want to, I’ve seen the way you look at me—you’ll toss your rules away and there will be no regrets.”

Stacey’s grip on her phone tightened.

“Ryan is headed to Brisbane tomorrow unless he’s still sick at home. Either way, he won’t be working at the pub.” She sucked in a deep breath. “I’ll be there with Sam and a few others for a drink to see a band playing in the beer garden. If you want to join us.”

“Like a date?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “Maybe I am ready to toss the rules aside.”

“I’d like that, Anastasia,” I rumbled, leaning into her.

Something tugged on my pants. The biggest mouse is the world was crawling up my leg and another was on my shoe.

I howled, grabbing Stacey by the shoulders. Her torch fell to the floor as I jumped from foot to foot.

The sound of a rifle being cocked echoed off the shed walls.

“Who the fuck are you and what are you doing to my sister?”

I whipped around, shielding Stacey from the intruder.

“Jesus Christ, Tom!” Stacey cried. “This is Harry, the new doctor at work. He’s helping me with the feed.”

She has a gun-toting brother?Tom lowered his gun, unimpressed. “Oh.”

He was broader where Ryan was taller. Just. I’d expected a uni student to look less ‘mountain man’ and more … nerdy.

Stacey pushed out from behind me. “A rat ran up his leg and he freaked out.”

I really wasn’t the Bear Grylls of doctors right now.

“Hey.” I waved weakly, my eyes still on Tom’s gun. “Wait, a rat?” I croaked.

“Didn’t know if you were friend or foe,” Tom shrugged. “G’day. Good to meet you, doc.”
