“Uh, yeah. I have a date planned with someone already.”

“And you didn’t tell me?!”

“Well, it was two in the morning and you were asleep, so no.”

“When do I get to meet them?”

Shit.

Backtrack!

Run away!

Deflect!

“Let me go on an actual date first.”

“When is that happening?”

“Oh nooo, Spud needs me. Gotta go, I love you, byyye!” I hung up and buried my face in my hands. “Fuck me.”

I distracted myself with laundry and chores until it was time to get ready for work again. Billie and Tony were going to be there and somehow that made me nervous. I took a few extra minutes on my hair, chose a cap sleeved blouse with a little flounce, and added gold star earrings. It was enough to look a bit more polished, but not so much that it would look like I was actuallytryingto look cuter.

Spud got extra cuddles and a full serving of food to munch while I was at work.

“Be a good boy, okay?”

Spud looked at me, eyes full of innocence, like he’d never done a thing wrong in his whole entire life. We both knew that was lies.

I made kissy sounds as I closed the door and rode the elevator to the main floor and zipped off to the library.

Miranda was waiting at the circulation desk when I walked in.

“Three's company tonight at the bean bags,” Miranda said. “And the board game tournament down the hall is still going strong so you’ll probably see some of them by morning.”

“Sounds good. Have a nice night.” I waved my coworker off after accepting the keys and dropped my purse behind the desk.

Billie was trotting over when I looked up again. They were as gorgeous as yesterday, dressed this time in black denim shorts over fishnets, combat boots, and a black sequined tank top. I shoved down the little spiral of desire that swirled under my skin.

“You’re here!” Billie grinned and leaned onto the desk, crossing their forearms.

Their excitement overmemade my stomach flip.

“Jasper's here tonight. Do you want to meet him?”

“Yeah, of course. Let me check my task list first so I don’t miss anything time sensitive.”

I only panicked a teensy tiny bit that they’d brought their boyfriend to meet me. What did thatmean? It shouldn’t mean anything. They were only being friendly.

Oh, god.

Okay.

Focus, Nicky.

Billie tapped their dark purple nails on the desk while they waited. The evening staff had gotten through the rest of the donated books which meant I was on task to get them on the shelves.

“Don’t laugh when you see him, okay?” Billie's gaze was soft. “Jaspy is going through aphasewith his facial hair and we’re trying to be supportive.”
