She went to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of sparkling water that the firm always kept stocked.

“You’ve been busy all week,” she lowered her voice as she cracked the bottle open. “I feel like I barely see you around here.”

“I know.” He kept his voice low too. “It goes with the territory.”

“Do you enjoy the litigation stuff?”

He checked the door to make sure they were still alone and sighed.

“Not as much as I hoped I would.” The admission lifted a weight off his chest.

She took a sip of her sparkling water, her expression pensive now.

“Are you locked into it? Can you change to a different type of law?”

“Yeah, I think I can. I need to give it some careful consideration.”

The offer from the partners in trust and estate drifted through his mind—not for the first time in the last couple of weeks.

The microwave dinged, and he pulled out the steaming food.

“Thanks for this.” The basil chicken and brown rice already had his mouth watering in anticipation.

“It’s always more than I can eat. Happy to help.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

His gaze caught on the dark-red tips of her nails.

“I love the new nail color. Not sure if I told you.”

Her lips twitched. “Only a few times.”

It was especially hot when she was going down on him, with her nails lightly dug into his thighs.

This was the longest conversation they’d had at work since they’d started sleeping together.

Just being near to her felt dangerous and illicit. He wanted to run to Tori’s coworkers in HR and disclose their relationship.

Only, was it actually one? Tori still seemed a little squirrely whenever she realized how much time they were spending together.

Which is why it had nearly killed him when she’d stayed home alone two nights this week. Last night being one.

Sometimes he panicked a little and worried she was losing interest. But then she always came back or invited him over again.

His voice dropped to almost a whisper. “Are you coming over tonight?”

For a moment, she hesitated before her gaze lifted to his and held. There was uncertainty in those pretty hazel eyes.

“Should we take another night off? Is it too much?”

“It’s not for me. I miss you.”

“Same.” Her gaze softened. “My place this time?”

“Deal.”

“What’s going on in here?”

James froze, but Tori didn’t even flinch, just stepping away calmly as Ryan’s voice cut through the intimate moment.
