Could he tell how much his words drenched my core? He could probably smell it. That was another reason I needed to leave right now. Closing my eyes for a brief second before, I took a long slow breath. That’s when I noticed that Devon had physically detained Kelly. The world around me came back into focus once again and I finally heard her saying, “Let go of me, you big brute!” as she struggled to get out of his hold.

My vision clouded with white as my anger rose like a rocket. My eyes locked with Devon’s as I absently shoved Luca out of my way. And then with a voice that sounded nothing like mine, I demanded, “Let go of her you asshole.” If I had to throw down with Luca and Devon, I would. I was actually itching to do so.

Devon’s hands fell to his sides and Kelly stumbled toward me, grabbing my hand. At her touch, my focus broke and I scanned every inch of her body, making sure he hadn’t harmed her.

“Come on, Ivy, let’s go.” She yanked me toward the stairs while glaring at the two men over her shoulder. To my surprise, neither Luca nor Devon tried to stop us.

Back inside my car, I tried to process everything that happened. Why did Luca affect me so much? And why hadn’t I noticed that Devon had forcibly detained Kelly? If only Caroline had told me more about mating and whatever it meant to be marked. My eyes slowly slid toward Kelly, and I covertly sniffed.

“Stop that,” Kelly grumbled and then sniffed her arm. Unable to help myself, I laughed. “Oh, shut it, Ivy. You did the same thing.”

One nod and I admitted, “I did. I’m sorry that I’m a terrible shifter.”

“No apologies needed. Caroline may not have taught you much, but you’re a badass fighter, that’s for sure.” Kelly shifted in her seat. “So, what’s the deal with you and that guy? What’s his name?”

“Luca,” I supplied, wondering how much I wanted to tell Kelly. I’d never kept anything from her before, but nothing like this had ever happened either. My wolf always tried to break free whenever he came around. Always a little crazy and a lot less predictable, I didn’t know if she would stick her tail in the air for Luca to mate her straight away or if she’d make him prove himself again like he had the first time in the bar.

“Mm…Luca is one fine-looking man. Not as good looking as Brian, but still model status.”

My lips twitched with amusement. “Oh, Luca’s definitely model status.”

“So, spill it, sister.”

I glanced over at Kelly and let out a long slow sigh. “I met Luca in a bar. I had missed Fang yet again and needed an outlet for my...”

“Sex. You needed sex, Ivy. It’s okay to say it. There’s nothing wrong with women needing a little dick sometimes. I swear, I’m so tired of the double standards. Men go looking for one-night stands all the time. Nothing wrong with women blowing off a little steam too.”

I laughed, “I agree. But my wolf thinks that he is our mate. And it doesn’t matter to her that I can’t have him. If he finds out what I am, it could mean death. As inmydeath.”

Kelly’s smile disappeared. “What are you going to do?”

I shrugged. What could I say, no man was worth my life, but I didn’t know how to get around the situation? My wolf constantly grumbled her frustration, keeping me uneasy and restless. That I constantly fought the urge to hunt Luca down every minute of every day. Sleep never came effortlessly anymore, and when I finally fell into a restless slumber, dreams of Luca made me burn for him even more.

“I don’t know, Kelly.” It felt like an impossible dilemma with no happy ending in sight.

“I’ve got it!” She said, snapping her fingers. “Brian asked me out this weekend. How about the three of us go to Y-2?”

“Dancing?” I scrunched my nose.

“Yes, dancing. You can find someone to help you forget Luca.”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea.” Even though Y-2 wasn’t in shifter territory, that didn’t’ mean there wouldn’t be one there. And I didn’t want to be a third wheel.

“Oh, come on, Ivy, it’ll be fun.”

“Okay, fine,” I said, giving in even though I seriously had my doubts. My wolf snapped at me for even thinking of sex with someone besides Luca.

My phone buzzed. Snatching it from my pocket, I opened the screen.

Jackson: Another death last night. The authorities have already left but head over and see if you can find any clues that they missed. I’ll send the coordinates.

Me: On it!

“Work?” Kelly asked.

“Yeah. I’ll drop you off at home. And don’t wait up. I may hit Mickey’s when I’m finished.”

Kelly waggled her eyebrows. “Maybe you’ll run into that guy there. What was his name?”
