“It will be helping, though. In the long run, it will do the world of good, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the short term.”

“You’re smashing it.”

“Thanks. It sounds like you’re doing all good things with the business, too.”

“It’s going well, but if you really want the truth, we’re going to need to take on an extra pair of hands if we don’t want to go under.”

“I thought so.” Emmet didn’t hide the fact he was crushed by the thought of it.

“Just until you know what you want to do long term,” Brodie added.

“Oh, I’m coming back to work. It’s a question of when, not if.”

“You are?”

“The physio seems to think I can move to crutches in just a few weeks’ time if I keep going with the programme.”

“Well,” Brodie looked into his eyes. “The sooner you get your arse back to work, the better. I’ve got jobs coming out of my arse there and I’m up to my eyeballs in paperwork.”

“Thanks for keeping us above board. I owe you big time.”

“You owe me nothing. That’s what family is for.”

“Bring me the paperwork. It’s not like I don’t have time on my hands. I can start working through the accounts for the year, so we’re ready for the taxman. I can take control of the bookings, too, and write an ad for our new employee.”

Brodie shook his head. “I can’t ask you to do all of that. You’ve just been through a huge ordeal. The last thing you should be thinking about is work.”

“Honestly, it will be a welcome distraction. I’m sick to death of thinking about whether I’ll ever be able to do any of the things I enjoy again.”

“Of course, you will. It just takes time. You could start with a fishing trip.”

“Would you be up for that?”

“Well, Sophia won’t be around to moan about how long we’re gone for. She’s leaving in less than two weeks so if you’re up to it, I’ll be glad of a distraction, too.”

“Deal. You drop the paperwork off for work and I’ll show you how to catch a fish or two,” Emmet teased. Brodie arched a brow, and they both chuckled.

Instantly Brodie felt like his load was a little lighter now shared and he hoped his brother-in-law felt the same way.

CHAPTER 64

Sophia walked the length of the beach with her friends. So much had happened in such a short space of time and each of them had been affected by Lani Bay in one way or another.

The sand between Sophia's toes was warm and the sea air felt light as it breezed through her hair. None of them were young, wild and free anymore, yet together, all of them felt it.

Sophia linked her arm through Callie’s, and Paige linked Callie at the other side. One by one, arms linked through arms until they formed a walking chain of friendship that was unbreakable.

“I’m so happy everyone could make it because I wanted to tell you altogether that I’ve decided to leave the bay, for a while.”

Gasps and questions came pouring in and Sophia was reminded how much of a huge decision she had made.

“I need to find myself again. Since the operation, I kind of feel as though I’m in someone else's body. I guess I got so used to being ill. Now it feels weird to be healthy again. For so long I didn’t think I’d get my second chance, now I have it; I don’t want to waste it. I have to follow my dreams.”

“Where are you going to go?”

“Is Brodie going with you?”

The questions kept coming, and she answered all of them. Each time feeling a little more confident in her own decision. With their understanding and acceptance, it didn’t feel like as bizarre an idea as she had first thought.
