“Darling girl,” her voice softened along with her eyes. “If these last few months have taught me anything, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted in this life. However long or short it might be. Every single moment is a gift, and it’s up to you whether you choose to accept the gift, or toss it in the trash heap.”

“What about Brodie? What about after I’m gone?”

“Shhh. Don’t think about after. You can’t control what happens after. All you can control is what you choose to do with the time you have together. Brodie loves you. He wants to be your husband and I’ve known, from the moment you told me about that sweet first kiss you shared, that you want to marry him, too. Don’t let your illness take that from you or him. It’s taken enough already.”

“What if I don’t get a match? You don’t think he’s making a huge mistake?”

“A mistake? Marrying my smart, kind, wonderful daughter? I think he’s making the best decision of his lifetime, transplant or no transplant.”

Sophia’s eyes searched her mum’s and a thick sob threatened to escape her lips when all she found there was the truth. Although she couldn’t put her finger on what exactly, something inside of Sophia shifted. Perhaps a bittersweet acceptance that maybe her mum was right?

Mel enveloped her in a hug. Of all the hugs they’d shared, this was the most poignant and Sophia would cherish it forever.

For a fleeting second, there was no sickness or sadness. Just a mother, hugging her daughter with all the love she could muster and a daughter clinging to her mum because she never needed anything more.

CHAPTER 3

By the time Brodie was due back from work, Sophia was feeling much brighter. The inevitable nausea from dialysis had begun to subside, and she forced herself to be up and ready to greet him when he walked through the door.

After spending the hours since Mel had bought her home from hospital, drifting in and out of sleep, Sophia was certain that she was making the right decision and she couldn’t be more excited to tell Brodie. She knew he’d be expecting her to still be asleep when he got home and he certainly wouldn’t be expecting dinner.

Smiling, Sophia sashayed into the kitchen to find her mum had left a Chinese chicken salad for them to share. Mel was always cooking them new recipes from the special dietary requirements recipe list the nurse had given them. Sophia took a seat, feeling thankful to have a mum so devoted to her kids as hers was. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her or Emmet.

“You’re late.”

Brodie beamed as he walked in and dropped his bags on the floor on either side of his feet, grinning at Sophia from the doormat. He was used to seeing her in pyjamas and sweatpants, so the floaty lemon dress she was wearing was a big change, even with the matching cardigan she had draped around her shoulders to stop herself from shivering.

“And you’re a vision,” he didn't even bother kicking his boots off. Instead, he flew toward her and pressed a kiss to her lips as he wrapped his arms around her.

“I thought we could have dinner.”

“You’re hungry?” He arched a brow, eyeing the food container on the table.

“Not really, but I knew you would be.”

“I’m famished. You’re too good to me. See, wife material. I don’t say this shit for no reason.”

“Actually, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”

He took the seat beside her and looked intrigued. Suddenly, he seemed less interested in dinner.

“No, please eat. You’ve probably not had anything since breakfast.”

“You’re here, looking all serene and gorgeous and wanting to talk to me about becoming my wife and you expect me to think about food?”

“Are you ever not thinking about food?” she teased.

“I’m not thinking at all right now. All the blood from my head is elsewhere.”

“Brodie,” Sophia rolled her eyes.

He widened his knees to reveal a lump in his cargo pants where his cock was now standing to attention.

“Is your mind just always on it?”

“You caught me off guard and seriously, you’ve never looked sexier.”

However ill she was, Brodie always found his girlfriend sexy. It’s one of the many reasons she adored him.
