“Are you kidding me? Brodie? You’re doing everything. You haven’t stopped these few months, but I think the best thing you could do for now is just be there for Sophia. She wouldn’t want you running all over the county driving yourself half-crazy looking for someone who might not even be willing to help. Go home. Be with her. She needs you by her side, not off chasing stars.”

Brodie didn’t argue. He had an engulfing feeling that maybe Sophia was right. Perhaps he should stop fighting the inevitable and focus on making the most of what little time they had left together.

The phone rang through the car and the sound of his fiancée’s voice came through the speakers.

“Emmet, where are you?”

“I’m on my way back into town. I had to pick Brodie up, he had some car troubles.”

“That’s a lie, but I really don’t care. Are you with him now? He’s not picking up.”

“My phone died, Sophia.,” he lied. He wasn’t about to tell her what had really happened or she’d be worried senseless. “I’m on my way back to the bay. I’m so sorry, baby. I just–”

“How long will you be?”

“Only around half an hour,” Emmet answered.

“Okay good. Come straight to the hospital. I need to see you.”

The hairs on the back of Brodie’s neck stood up. “Has something happened?” he asked.

“I’ll talk to you when you get here. Emmet’s driving.”

“Sophia, I’m fine. Spit it out.” Emmet demanded.

“Not while you're driving.”

“I’m pulling over. Hold on.”

“Is he pulling over? Don’t lie to me, Brodie.”

“I’d never lie to you. He’s pulling over, hold on.”

Emmet pulled the car to a halt at the side of the road as soon as it was safe to do so.

“Are you okay? We’re not moving. What happened?” Brodie wished more than ever that the miles between them didn’t exist, so he could be with her face-to-face. He had a feeling this was face-to-face kind of news.”

“Oh god. There’s no good way to say this, so I’m just going to spit it out. Emmet, I’m sorry to do this over the phone and I don’t even know if you remember Uncle Austin, but he’s actually our brother. I’ll tell you the details when you get back, but he’s here, in the bay.”

Sophia fell silent for a second and then the raw emotion in her voice tugged tight on Brodie and Emmet’s heart strings. “He’s blood type O like me. They’re running the tests as we speak. If he’s a match, we’re doing the transplant as soon as possible.”

CHAPTER 37

The girls poured in one by one. It was late and Sophia felt exhausted but wide awake with a nervous energy buzzing around her body like an angry wasp.

“What are you all doing here? You didn’t have to come.”

“Where I come from, a transplant is kind of a big deal,” Paige rolled a finger in the air.

“I can’t believe it’s really happening,” Kate looked as though she might burst with excitement and Sophia made a mental note not to get her hopes up.

It was no good. They were already sky high and seeing all of her friends, knowing they were all rooting for her, made them rocket to the moon and then some.

“How are you feeling?” Callie asked.

“I don’t know.” Sophia couldn’t put into words all the emotions whirling around as her friends gathered around her hospital bed.

“Can someone help me sit up a bit?”
