“Or your mum,” she pointed out, and that was enough to make him grab his jeans and pull them back on.

Sophia watched on as his naked butt disappeared back into them and although she knew she wasn’t well enough to do any of the things she wanted to do to him, she made a silent vow to do them all twice when she was up to it.

CHAPTER 45

Callie arrived like the breath of fresh air she always was, yet Sophia could see that she’d had the stuffing knocked out of her.

“Good morning. Am I okay to come in?”

“Hey. Of course. I’ve got to go to the hospital soon, though. They want to check me over.”

“I could come with you?”

“Actually, that would be great. Brodie, you don’t mind if Callie comes with me instead, do you?”

“Of course not. If that’s what you want? It will give me a chance to get some work done.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Callie smiled.

“How did you sleep?”

“Good. Once I’ve got the pain under control, I can almost forget about it. I mean, it’s there, but nothing like before.”

“Thank God. We weren’t sure whether you’d be up to everyone coming, so they’ve sent me to scope things out. I mean, I don’t know why not Jayda or Kate, they would have been a much better choice if you were in need of a chilled vibe because I am the opposite of chilled,” she said without barely drawing a breath.

“I can see that. What’s up?”

“Nothing.” She shook off the nervous energy in her hands and was practically bouncing on the spot. “Everything.”

Sophia nodded, and Callie began to pace the room.

“Sorry. They really should have sent someone else.”

“Don’t be silly. You’re fine.”

Callie’s eyes darted to Brodie, who was packing up his work bag across the room.

“Put the kettle on and let’s talk it through.”

“Can you drink coffee?”

“No, maybe in the future but for now I’m sticking to water. You can, though.”

“Shall I pour you a glass of water?”

“Yes, please. Help yourself to snacks if you need them. Ben and Jerry are in the freezer.”

“Coffee and ice cream. Is it that obvious I’m a total mess?”

“And there’s my cue to leave.” Brodie kissed Sophia on the forehead, winked at Callie, and shot out of the door, leaving the friends to their girl talk.

“So?”

“Okay, there’s no good way to say this, so I’m just going to say it, but don’t freak out.’

“I’ll try.”

“I almost kissed him.”
