I don’t give her another chance to ask me another question. I walk over to her side the car and open the door for her. I take her hand.

“Are you cold?” I ask her. “Do you need my jacket?”

“No, I’m okay,” she says, still very confused. “Where are we going again?”

“It’s just up this way,” I tell her.

I walk her up the concrete pathway until we reach the pond.

It registers for her when she sees that I have arranged the set-up. There are candles lining the pathway so that you can see the pond. There are rose petals sprinkled on the ground.

Faith stops walking and gasps.

I keep guiding her forward.

“Faith,” I tell her as I drop to one knee. She’s already begun to cry. “Faith Daniels, you are the love of my life. And these last six months with you have changed my life. You have changed everything. I don’t want to go backward. I want you, and only you, forever. Faith, will you marry me?”

I wait in the most anxiety I have ever felt with my life for her answer.

A huge smile spreads across Faith’s face.

“Rex, of course, yes, I will marry you,” she tells me.

I stand up and slide the ring I picked out for her on her finger.

Then, I kiss Faith.

I hold her in my arms.

And I can’t believe that I am marrying the preacher’s daughter.

The man who was sent on retreat as punishment walked away with the love of his life.

I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
