She looks up at me and smiles. “Thank you. I feel better after my bath. Are you hungry?”

I try not to laugh.

I’m sure she feelsgreatafter her bath, according to what I heard.

“I’m starved,” I tell her.

“Perfect, you sit down and I will serve us,” she says.

I do as I’m told.

This beach house really is the perfect place to relax. The pool was amazing. The towels were so soft and hotel-quality. And the perfect woman is sharing this space with me. A guy could really get used to this place.

Beth slides a pasta bowl in front of me and sits across from me with hers.

As soon as she sits down and looks in my eyes, she says, “Wine. We need wine.”

She’s nervous.

And I think that is so endearing.

I’m nervous, too, but way less so knowing that she wants me, too.

She doesn’t realize that this thing between us has been unrequited for quite some time now.

Beth grabs the bottle and glasses, bringing them back to the table.

She pours the wine for us both.

“This is so nice of you,” I tell her, grabbing the glass. “I promise I’ll handle the dishes.”

She grabs her wine glass too and takes a sip. “Absolutely not. You’re my… guest.”

“Thank you for that, by the way,” I tell her. “I know your idea of this week did not include just the two of us by ourselves; but I, for one, am really happy to be here. With you.”

Beth blushes. “Honestly, I am happy that you’re here, too. With me. I, uh, told Paul that I would be fine by myself, but the truth is that I would have been really lonely here without you.”

I take another sip of my wine. “So, what made you decide on this trip anyway? You two have never been the vacation kind of family.”

Beth nods at me while she twirls a fork through her pasta. “Well, I could never afford a trip like this when Paul was younger. But now? I’m turning 40 this year and it may sound silly, but I am kind of ready to live more of my life. I know what’s important. My family. My memories. And I booked this trip as a symbol of that, I guess.”

I’m falling more in love with her with every word she speaks.

“That’s not silly at all. That is amazing. I think you should do more things like this for yourself,” I tell her.

“And what about you?” she asks me. “What have you been doing for yourself lately?”

I lean forward, nearer to her. “I stayed here. With you.”

Chapter Eight

Beth

I am crossing dangerous territory.

I don’t even really recognize myself anymore.

I am pleasuring myself in the bathroom so that my son’s best friend can hear me.
