“I love you too,” I tell him, then I end the call.
I let the sun beat on my face for just a moment longer.
I cannot believe I am going to be alone under this giant roof with the man who is making me weak in my knees.
I have to be the adult here.
I have to control myself.
I turn around and see Justin through the window. His bulky body. His 5 o’clock shadow.
And I am not sure if I will have any control at all.
Chapter Five
Justin
So, here we are.
Totally alone.
Beth and I both tried our best to keep busy the past few hours, but we are coming up short on excuses not to be around each other now. She went to the grocery. I unpacked the rest of my clothes. She unpacked the groceries. I went for a run.
I walk back into the house, dripping wet with my shirt off.
I know that I am already crossing into dangerous territory, but the Florida heat is unforgiving as hell and I am so sweaty that I look like I took a dive in a pool.
“Oh,” Beth says, staring at me. “You’re hot. I mean, it’s hot. Is it… hot outside?”
I smile.
I see it in her face.
Beth is attracted to me. I finally,finallyhave that look that I wanted from her for so long. Lips parted. Eyes glazed. Words totally jumbled.
“Yeah, I’m on fire,” I tell her. “I think I’ll jump in the pool and cool off a bit.”
I walk over toward the door behind her.
“That’s… a good idea,” she tells me.
I pause at the back door and turn around to look at her.
Beth is beautiful, even when she is just unpacking groceries in the kitchen. Her short, blonde hair is pulled back in a small clip at the nape of her neck. She doesn’t have any makeup on her face, but she looks tanned and blushed. A natural glow.
“You can join me, if you want,” I tell her.
I’m flirting with her outright.
It’s a bold move.
I would never have tried it had I not seen the way she looked at me just moments ago.
Beth turned around and batted her eyelashes at me.
I’m waiting on bated breath for what she may say next to me.
“You go ahead,” she tells me. “I don’t want to get my hair wet.”
