“Okay, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She focused on the foliage over his shoulder.

The cozy porch breakfast nook allowed them to eat outdoors without leaving their cabin. The pine tree side sheltered them in privacy, allowing them to partake in the sunshine and enjoy their meal. A pair of squirrels scampered across the grass, foraging and playing.

“Cameron, you’ve been sighing and looking weepy-eyed for the last two days. Biting your lip. What’s worrying you?”

“I’m going to miss all this when we leave.” She waved towards the playful pair.

“Miss being able to boss me around and have your wicked way with me. Don’t worry; if you’re a good girl when we get back, I’ll still let you ride me sometimes.”

“Blake, there won’t be any riding when we get back. This,” she waved her hand around. “All this ends in three days.”

The clang of the silverware falling to his plate shattered her reverie. His nostrils flared.

“What the fuck? This isnotending.”

“I put in my resignation letter. I only have one week of work left…”

His brows lowered. “I never accepted that fucking resignation, and I never will.”

“Blake–”

“Cameron. You’re working for Scott Electronics. Period. Now, if you want to branch out… I thought about your idea of starting a nonprofit for girls in S.T.E.M. It sounds amazing. No reason it can’t come under the S.E. umbrella. You know, I feel strongly about science and tech opportunities for kids.”

“I knew you wouldlikeit. But I also know it wouldn’t be a passion of yours like it is for me. That’s why I didn’t propose it to Scott Electronics.”

“Cameron, that’s why you’ll be the one running it. Hell, open a damn campus of classrooms when we move to our new location, but do itwithS.E. Do it withme.”

“Blake, when you wanted to create yourCosmos World, you could have stayed where you were. But you wanted to do it on your own.”

“It’s different,Micron,never appreciated me.”

“Is it?”

His head shot up like one of his animated characters in a video game, looking like it would explode. “Of course. Cameron, I wouldn’t have kept you by my side if you hadn’t brought value to the company. You’ve been the most important person in my life for the last three years. And now that we’ve finally gotten over this employee, boss obstacle, we can have the kind of relationship–”

“–What kind of relationship?” She rolled her eyes, tapping her foot on the floor. “You don’t do relationships. You don’t do long-term, one-on-one, and I don’t do anything else.”

“Is that what you want from me?”

“No, of course not.”

“No?” He roared, sending their observers scampering. She looked around, but the tall pine trees shielded them. “Why the fuck not?” He continued, not lowering his voice at all. “If it were anybody else, you wouldn’t have a problem with a relationship.”

“I’ve known you for three years and never seen you with anyone.”

“And it isn’t fucking obvious to you why?”

“Because you’re notthatguy.”

“Or because, dammit, you’rethatgirl.Thegirl. You were the one I wanted, but I fucked it all up at a damn office party. Embarrassing you, embarrassing myself, and we could never even fucking discuss it.”

“You were drunk; you didn’t mean it. And if we’d discussed it, it would have been awkward for us.”

“Cameron, have you ever known me to do something I didn’t want to do? Drunk or sober?”

Her brows met together, and her head tilted, but she knew the answer. “No.”
